CONVERTIBLE WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2,13t2.
Application filed July 6, 1910. Serial No. 570,668.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH W. lnnmns and DANIEL W. ROBERTS, citizens of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the subject of wrenches, and more particularly to that 'class of wrenches which are convertible from an ordinary monkey or nut wrench into a pipe wrench, and vice versa.
To this end the invention has in view a simple and thoroughly practical construction of an auxiliary jaw piece and reversible fastenings therefor that serve to carry out the objects of the invention in a secure and practical manner.
In the accompanying drawings :'Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combination tool constructed in accordance with the present invention, and showing the parts in position for use as a pipe wrench. Fig. 2 is a sec tional view of the tool with the parts in position for use as a pipe wrench Fig. 3 is a detail elevation showing the parts of the tool or wrench adapted for use as an ordinary monkey or nut wrench. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the tool shank and outer jaw adapted for use as a screw driver. Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective of the shiftable auxiliary combination jaw.
Like references designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. f The improved tool includes in its organization as the primary members thereof, a tubular or hollow handle member 1 provided at one end with the inner wrench jaw 2-, and the adjustable tool shank 3, telescoping within the handle member and carrying at its outer end the outer wrench jaw 4, said inner and outer jaws2 and 4 being preferably of the conventional form and bearing the same opposing relation as the jaws of an ordinary wrench.
According to the present invention, the outer wrench jaw 4 is provided upon its inner side with the plain, flat, gripping face 5 forming an element of the tool when employed as an ordinary monkey or nut wrench, said plain gripping face 5 being arranged for use in opposition to the corresponding plain, flat gripping face 6 formed on the outer side of a shiftable auxiliary Combination jaw piece 7. This shift-able jaw piece 7 is provided with slidably embraces the tool shank 3 bet-ween the jaws 2 and l-., and upon its inner side that is, opposite its outer plain face 6, the said jaw piece is provided with an inclined toothed gripping wedge 9 which is adapted to be opposed to correspondingly toothed gripping surfaces 10 formed on the face of the inner wrench jaw 2, said opposing elements 9 and 10 constituting the gripping surfaces or faces when the tool is employed as a pipe wrench. Also, the said inner wrench jaw 2 has formed in its face a keeper seat or socket 11 of tapering depth to accommodate therein the gripping wedge 9 when the auxiliary -jaw piece is fastened to the inner jaw 2.
To adapt the tool for use as the ordinary monkey or nut wrench, the auxiliary jaw piece 7 is held fast to the inner jaw 2 by means of suitable fastenin'gs. This is preferably accomplished as shown in the drawings, that is, by employing reversible fastenings consisting of pivotal spring latching plates 12. These plates 12 are pivoted at one end, as at 13, respectively upon the opposite outer sides of the jaw piece 7 and the free end portions of the said plates are provided with catch openings 14 adapted to be snapped into engagement with the fixed keeper studs 15 and 16 which are respectively provided on the side faces of the outer and inner wrench jaws.
When the tool is employed as a pipe wrench, thefastenings 12 are engaged with the studs 15 on the outer jaw, thus holding the auxiliary jaw piece to the outer jaw. With the parts thus arranged, the tool is ready for use as a pipe wrench. Correspondingly, when the jaw piece is fastened in a similar manner to the inner jaw, the tool is ready for use as a nut wrench, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
To provide for holding the tool shank 3 at the desired adjustment, the shank is pro- 'vided along one edge wit-h a series of ratchet teeth 17 adapted to be engaged by corre sponding locking teeth 18 provided upon the inner edge of a holding dog 19. This dog is pivoted at one end, as at 20, to the jaw part, 2 of the handle member 1, and works through an opening 21 in the latter. Opposite its pivoted end, the said dog is provided with afinger lever 22, and a presser spring 23 hearing on the outer side of the dog normally holds it engaged with the teeth 17.
a slide loop 8 which i An outward movement of the finger on the lever 22 releases the dog and admits of any separation desired for the wrench j aws.
The tool shank is provided at'one end with a screw driver point 24, so that when the tool shankis removed as shown in Fig. 4,'g-it may be used as either a hammer or as a screw driver.
We claim:
A convertible wrench comprising a toolshankcarrying an outer jaw having upon its inner side a fiat gripping face, a tubular handle-member slidably and adjustably mounted on the tool-shank and carrying an inner jaw provided with oppositely arranged toothed gripping surfaces and formed between the said surfaces. with a depression constituting a seat of tapering wedge adapte mounted on the tool-shank between the two jaws and rovided upon one side with a plain fiat face, and upon its, opposite side ,With acentrall arranged projecting toothed d to lie in a plane between and oppose said toothed gripping surfaces, and also adapted to be completely housed within the said seat, and reversible fastenings for securing the auxiliary jaw piece 'to either jaw.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afix our signatures in the presenceof two witne'sses.
