outside of thesupport 6 and is of substantially like shape, whereby when it is turned into alineiuent therewith it will give the front-of the attaehi-nent a neat unbroken appoarnheewuwl will aet to draw the extension S down toward the base-plate .lYhen the latching lever is thus disposed. a catch 15. formed by turning the edge of the metal at the lower end of the lever inwardly, engages with the edge of the sup- .port (Lily reason ,of the tendency of th's .-end oi the lever to spring toward the handle=T. The catch l-iis disengaged and the leveroperated hvza flange It; formed at the opposite edgaof the lever and turned in an outward direct ion. To the top and outer end of the extension 8 is attached a spool 17, having a displacealile cap lS. for covering the opening in the sfpout. when the same is not in use. The conahlv eti'ee'ted by providing the further with rearwardly-extending ears embracing the uppemite sides of the spout. to wh ch they are pivoted by rivets: 19. thus adapting the cap to hethrown from the end of the spout. to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 when the contents of the can are to he poured out. The ca) 18 is prevented from dropping down arther over the end of the s out. \\hen it covers the sanuhy a flange 20 formed at: its back edge as shown in section in Fig. 1. The spout '17 is provided with an extenaion .21 communicating therewith, on the under face of the extended portion 8 of the handle 7, which is in the nature of a punch having a beveled cutting edge adjacent to the support 3.
\l'hen a can is inserted within the attachment after a small vent'o n-ning i4 formed "11 the top thereof, the lever is thrown to the position sljown in Fig. 2. and the hottom of the can seated onthe haw-plate .i with theedge then-of in contact with a stop 21%,
' formed by cutting a'tongue from said plate. By now tanning the latching, lever downw'urtlly. the cutting edge 22 is forced through thetop of the can and cuts an opening therein as shown in Fig. l, the metal which is removed from the top heiug turned downwardly and a tight joint made about the opening by a gasket 24. which si'u'rounds the extension 21. The contents of the can neetion lietweeuthe cap and vwpout is prefer" with the lower point of Said edge located pot or molasses can, and the said contents be kept fresh and free from dust and other foreign matter, in addition to being secured against waste by evaporation, upsetting, etc.
The invention as shown and described while being the preferred practical construction of my improved attachment, may be modified in numerous particulars within the scope of the invention as defined in the annexcd claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt:
1. In an attachment for cans, a'base plate on which the bottom of the can is adapted to be seated, having a stop for centering the can in the attachment, a handle and a support projecting upwardly from said plate, the handle being extended at its upper end to overhang the base plate, a dependin tongue carried at the end of the extend portion of the handle, and a lever connected with said tongue and supportfor clamping the can to the base plate.
2. In an attachment for cans; a base plate on which the bottom of the can is adapted to be seated, having a stop for centering the can in the attachment, a handle and a. support projecting upwardly from said plate, the handle being extended at its upper end to overhang the base plate, a depending tongue carried at the endof the extended portion of the handle, a lever connected with said tongue and support for clamping the can to the base plate, and a catch formed on said lever for locking it to said support.
3. In an attachment for cans, a. base plate, a handle connected with the base plate, having the upper end thereof extended to overhang said plate, a spout carried by the extended portion of the handle, having a cutting edge, and means for forcing the extended portion of the handle toward the base plate, whereby the cutting ed e of the spout is forced throu h the top 0 the can for the purpose desenied.
4. In an attachment for cans, a base plate, a handle connected with the base plate having the upper portion thereof extended to overhang said plate, a spout carried on the extended portion of the handle, having an extension provided with a cutti edge, a gasket surrounding said extension means for forcing the extended portion of and a the handle toward the base plate, whereby the cutting edge forms an opening in the top of the can and the gasket is pressed to the can about said opening for the purpose described.
5. In an attachment for cans, a base plate, a handle attached to the base plate, having the upper portion thereof extending to overhang said platc, a spout carried on the extended portion of the handle, means for forcing the extended portion of the handle in the direction of the plate to clamp the can therebetween, and a displaccable cap carried by the spout.
6. In an attachment for cans, a base plate, a supportand a handle connected with the base plate, the upper end of said handle being extended to overhang said plate, a depending tongue formed at the end of the extended portion of the handle, a link, a latching lever, means passing through a substantially vertical slot in the support connecting the link, tongue and latching lever together, and means passing through a slot in the support arranged at substantially right an les to the first-named slot, connecting the link and latching lever together.
7. In an attachment for cans, a base plate on which the can is adapted to be seated, a member having a spout adapted to occupy a position over the top of the can, a handle connecting said member with the base plate at one side of the attachment, and means for drawing the base plate and member together to clamp the cam therehetween, located at the opposite side of the attachment.
ii an attachment' for cans, a base plate on which the can is adapted to be seated, a handleconnected with the base plate at one side of the atta hment, having a member overhanging the base plate, a spout having a cutting edge carried by said member, and means located at the opposite side of the attachment for drawing saidbase plate and member together to clamp the can therebetween and force the cutting edge of the spout into the can.
In testimony whereof I have signed by name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
