Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed March 14. 1914. Serial No. 824,659.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAM ES 0. BUZARD, a citizen of the United States, and NnLs PETERSON, a subject of Great Britain, (who has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States,) both residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Openers for CondensedMilk Cans and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a combined opener and holder for tin cans containing contents of a liquid nature such as condensed milk and evaporated cream, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the openings in the can are normally closed so as to exclude dust and dirt as well as prevent leakage, although the openings are automatically uncovered when the can is lifted for the purpose of pouring out the contents thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a can opener and holder of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be readily applied to a can or removed therefrom, and
which enables the contents of the can to be dispensed as desired without waste.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
, i For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can opener and bolder constructed in accordance with the invention, the sliding frame which carries the can opening points being shown by full lines in a lowered position and by dotted lines in a raised position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, portions of the can and can engaging frame 'bein shown in section. Fi 4% is a front elevation of the can opener an I holder.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated to penetrate the same.
in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a base plate upon which the lower end of the can 2 is adapted to rest. A peripheral flange 3 surrounds the base plate 1 and engages the bottom of the can 2 so as to hold the can against lateral displacement. Projecting upwardly from one side of the base plate 1 and rigid therewith is a guide tube ":i', which extends longitudinally along the side of the can 2. The upper end of the guide tube ais provided with a pair of spring clamping arms 5 which are adapted to fit around and engage the upper portion of the can to retain the same securely in position within the holder. At the junction of the guide tube 4 and base plate 1 a reinforcing shoe 6 may be provided to render the frame as rigid as possible.
The portion of the device previously described constitutes the can engaging and supporting element of the invention. A
This frame may be conveniently formed from a single length of wire and includes a cross bar 9 extending across the top of the can, one end of the said cross bar being bent downwardly and sharpened to provide the can opening point 7 .while the opposite end of the cross bar is bent downwardly to provide a handle 10. After forming the handle 10, the wire is bent upwardly to provide a Slide 11 which passes loosely through the ide tube 1:, the upper end of the slide bemg extended laterally and riveted or otherwise secured to the cross bar 9 at 12. The extremity of this laterally bent upper end of the slide 11 is bent downwardly and sharpened to provide the other can opening point 8.
The lower end of the guide tube 4 is provided with a slot 14 to provide the necessary clearance space for the lower end of the handle 10 as the frame is moved up and down. After the can 2 has been placed in position the points 7 and 8 are brou ht into engagement with the topv gliereof an caused on the can is not j at in use and the device rests upon atable or like support, the sliding frame drops by gravity into a lowered position and the points 7 and 8 enter the two openings of the can so as to etfectivelyclose the same. Air is thus excluded from the interior of the can and dust anddirt is prevented from entering the can through the openings. Then it is desired to pour out the contents of the can, the operator grasps the handle 10 and lifts the entire device from the table or support. The can then drops by gravity until the lower end of the handle engages the upper end of the slot 14, the points '1? and 8 being thereby withdrawn from the openings in the top of the can. When the can is tilted the liquid contents thereof will flow out through the opening provided by the point 7, while air will enter the can through the opening formed by the point 8. As soon as the device is again placed upon the table or support and the handle 10 released, gravity will again cause the sliding frame to drop into a lowered position with the points 7 and 8 fitting in and closing the respective openings formed thereby. The device thus acts automatically to uncover the openings of the can when the can is lifted and to close the openings when the can is placed upon the table and released.
, 9 laving thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a can engaging and supporting member, a frame having a slidable connection therewith, a can opening point carried by the frame and movable toward and away from the can, and a handle for the frame,-the can and can supporting member dropping away from the can opening point by the action of gravity when the device is lifted by the said handle.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a can engaging and suporting member including a guide extending longitudinally along one side ofjthe can, a frame including a slide which is mounted within the before mentioned tide, a can opening point carried by the frame and movable toward and away from the can, and a handle formed in connection with the frame, the can and can supporting 'member dropping away from the can open ing point by the action of gravity when the device is lifted by the said handle.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a can supporting base plate, a guide projectingfrom one side of the base plate, clamping arms carried by the guide for yieldably engaging the upper portion of a can, a frame including a slide which is mounted within the before men tioned guide, a can opening point carried by the frame and movable toward and away from the top of the can, and a handle applied to the frame, the can dropping away from the can opening point by the action ofgravity when the device is lifted by the andle. I
t. In a device of the character described, the combination of a can supporting base plate, a'guide projecting from one side thereof, means carried by the guide for ena ing the to ortion of a can a frame in eluding a slide mounted within the before mentioned guide and a cross bar which projects across the top of the'can, a pair of can opening points projecting from the cross bar and movable toward and away from the top of the can, and a handle projecting from the frame, the can dropping away from the can cp'eniiv point by the action of gravity when the device is lifted by the said handle.
5. in a device of the character described, the combination of a can supporting base plate, a guide projecting from one side thereof, spring clamping arms carried by the guide for yieldably engaging the upper portion of the can, a slide mounted within the be fore mentioned guide, a cross bar carried by the upper end of the slide and extending 1 across the top of the can, a pair of can opening points projecting from the cross bar and movable toward and away from the top of the can as the slide is moved within the guide, and a handle projecting from the slide, the can dropping away from the can openin points by the action of. gravity when t e device is lifted by the said handle.
' In testimony whereof we, affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
