SCRUBBING-BOARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES E. KEILY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Canandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing- Boards, of Which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to scrubbing-boards for domestic use, particularly such as are used in connection with portable wash-tubs of ordinary form.

The object of the invention is to produce a scrubbing board, of simple and inexpensive construct-ion, having means by which itmay be mounted upon and secured to the upper port-ion of the side of a wash-tub, in a convenient position-for use, and particularly in such position that the scrubbing-board does not project dwnwardly to the bottom or into the contents of the tub, but is held in a nearly horizontal position entirely above the contents of the tub.

To the foregoing ends the invention consists in the scrubbing-board hereinafter described, as it is defined in the succeeding claims.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical median section of a scrubbingboard embodying the present invention, mounted in position for use upon a metal wash-tub; Fig. 2 is a partial plan-view of the subject-matter of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view on the line 33 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing a modified form of fastening-device for securing the scrubbing-board to the washtub.

The illustrated embodiment of the invention is a scrubbing-board which is stamped of a single piece of sheet-metal. with the exception of the fastening-device, which is a separate part. The body-portion 5 of the scrubbing-board is corrugated in the usual manner, and has lateral ribs 6 extending from the upper to the lower end of the board. Above the corrugated portion is a depressed portion 7 constituting a receptacle for soap. The body of the scrubbing-board is stiffened by deep depending side-flanges 8. At its upper end the scrubbing-board is provided with a downwardly-bent flange 9 which is connected with the body-portion by a curve so as to produce a hook adapted to engage the upper edge of the wash-tub in connection with which the scrubbing- Specification of Letters Patent.

board is used. As shown in Fig. 2 this hooked portion has a horizontal curvature which not only adapts it to the curved edge of the tub but also greatlyenhances the rigidity of the flange. To further stifien and reinforce this hooked portion the metal is provided with corrugations 10 at each lateral margin. The side flanges 8 terminate near the upper end of the body-portion in shoulders 11, which are stiffened-by means of a bail-shaped wire 12 which is locked into and connects these edges. The shoulders 11 form abutments which engage the inner surface of the Wash-tub near the top thereof, so that when the scrubbing-board is hooked over the edge of the tub, as in Fig. 1, the hooked portion and the abutments cooperate to maintain the scrubbing-board in a slightly-inclined position, with its lower end held at a substantial distance above the bottom of the tub. By this arrangement the scrubbing-board is maintained entirely above the contents of the tub, and for this reason the device is much more convenient in use than the scrubbing-boards heretofore employed, which project, at their lower portions, into the contents of the tub or down to the bottom thereof.

To secure the scrubbing-board in place upon the tub I employ devices of two forms, according as the board is to be used on tubs of different kinds. For use in connection with an ordinary metal tub having the usual rigid handles I employ a fastening-device in the form of a strip of metal 16, shown in Fig. 1. This device is provided with a hooked upper extremity 17, and the depending flange 9 of the scrubbing-board is provided with an upwardly-bent marginal portion 13 adapted to be engaged by the hook 17 The lower end of the fastener 16 is provided with a hook 18 which engages the handle 19 of the tub. In applying the scrubbing-board to the tub the hook 18 is first engaged under the handle 19, and the scrubbing-board is then hooked over the top of the tub and moved laterally thereon so as to slide it into engagement with the hooked upper extremity of the fastener, the scrubbing-board being thus adjusted laterally into position above the handle 19. As so secured in place the scrubbing-board constitutes a permanent attachment to the wash-tub, and it need not be removed therefrom since its position is such that it does not interfere with the various uses of the tub, and since it is not dislodged when the tub is inverted to empty its contents.

For use in connection with wash-tubs which are not provided with rigid handles, I employ the fastener shown in Fig. 4. This device comprises upper and lower metal strips 21 and 22 which are hooked to engage, respectively, the flange 13 on the scrubbing-board and the' lower edge of the tub. The parts 21 and 22 are connected, by a bolt 23, with a wing-nut 24, and this bolt engages an elongated slot 25 in the part 21, so as to permit relative longitudinal adjustment of the parts. By this arrangement the fasteneiw may be adapted to tubs of all sizes.

This fastener may be employed with wash-tubs of all kinds, but the simpler form shown in Fig. 1 is preferable where it can be conveniently employed.

I claim 1. A scrubbing-board having, in combination, a corrugated body-portion, a hook for engaging the edge of a wash-tubto support the scrubbing-board, and an abutment for engaging the inner surface of the wash-tub to sustain the board in inclined position therein, said body-portion and hook comprising an integral sheet-metal member and the hook being formed by a depending flange thereon extending substantially across the end of the body-portion and horizontally curved so as to conform to the curvature of the wash-tub.

2. A scrubbing-board provided with a hook at its upper end to engage the upper edge of a wash-tub, an abutment to engage the inner surface of the tub only near the top thereof, and a fastening-device loosely connected with the upper end of the scrubbing-board and adapted to depend therefrom outside the tub and engage an external projection on the tub to secure the scrubbing-board in place.

3. A scrubbing-board comprising an integral sheet-metal member having a corrugated body-portion, a depending flange at its upper end, a flange extending upwardly from the lower extremity of said depending flange, and a fastening-device comprising hooked upper and lower extremities adapted to engage, respectively, said upwardly-extending flange and an external pro ect1on on a wash-tub.
