To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. THOMP- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at No. 77 Eagle street, in the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lather-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to lather brushes, and the object of my invention is to provide a lather brush having adjustably secured thereto a holding device adapted to retain shaving soap; together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modified form of my'invention, Fig. 4: is a front elevation of a still further modified form of my invention.

' The lather brush, A, may be constructed in any suitable manner, the bristles, B, being secured within the ferrule, D, secured to a handle. To the side of the ferrule, D, I adjustably attach an arm, C, which supports the holder, E, adapted to carry the soap, F, held in position therein by the engagement of the flanges on the holder, E, or in any suitable manner. The arm, 0, may be made of wire if desired, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, preferably bent about midway between its ends forming two portions, K, K, which extend from the plate, E, and whichare bent at right angles at their ends, G, the arm, C, being secured to the holder, E, about midway between its ends. The ends, G, thereof may pass through suitable openings in the sides of the boss or plate, H, having introverted edges, h, h. The introverted edges are preferably curved at each end, extending toward the medial line of the boss or plate, H, and thus making the space between the edges at the end, 9, of the plate greater than where the edges turn over. Within the spaces, 72,, it, near the end, 9, of the boss or plate, H, the wires, K, K, forming the arm, C, when the holder, E, is drawn away from the bristles will enter after being forced toward each other, in moving along the curved portions, h, h,

of the boss or plate, H, and the soap and holder, E, in which it is placed, will occupy the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

When the holder, E, is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bristles, B, may be put into a shaving cup, not shown, without the soap interfering with the ordinary use of the brush. In the same way the brush may be used for putting the lather on the face, the soap being held in the holder, E, and retainedin position in the plate, H, by means of the arm, C, and so secured therein that it will not fall against the hand of the user of the brush or against the brush. When the holder is placed in alinement with and adjacent to the bristles of the brush as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the soap may be rubbed on the face very conveniently.

In Fig. 3, I show a modified form of my invention in which the soap, F, in its holder may be drawn away from the ends of the bristles, B, of the brush by moving the arm, L, longitudinally, the plate, M, being constructed to engage with the sides of the arm, L, and hold the arm in position when it occupies the place shown in full lines in Fig. 3, coming in contact with shouders, m,

m, in the sides of the arm, L. When the soap occupies the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the sides of the plate, M, will engage the shoulders, n, n, on the arm, L, and-hold the soap and holder rigidly in the desired position.

I show in Fig. 4; a still further modified form of my invention in which the soap, F, is supported in its holder, E, which is attached to the arm, 0. In the post, P, I place an opening through the arm which holds the soap holder, E, in position when the arm is placed thereon. The arm may be moved at right angles upon the post, P, as a pivot to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, by drawing the arm, 0, to the enlarged opening therein and moving the arm on the pivot, P, and then forcing the arm forward so that the narrower part of the opening in the arm, 0, will engage the post, P, when the arm, 0, and its attachments will be held rigidly in position.

I do not limit myself to the exact form of the holder or arm, or the means of connecting the holder to the lather brush, nor of course do I limit myself to any particular lather brush. I have shown the arm made of wire, but that is not intended as a limitation' to any particular material or shape or form thereof. I

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In combination with a lather brush, a holder; an arm therefor; a means for adjustably connecting said arm to said lather brush in such a manner that the holder may be held rigidly in alinement with and adj acent to the bristles of the brush, and also held rigidly in position when moved from the bristles.

2. In combination with a lather brush, a holder; an adjustable arm attached thereto; aplate or boss attached to the side of said lather brush; said arm adjustably secured to said plate or boss, substantially as described. v

3.. The combination of a lather brush provided with bristles; a handle; a holder; a wire bent at about midway between its ends and secured to said holder; a boss or plate secured to the sides of the lather brush; the

ends of said wire bent substantially at right angles to the main portion of the wire and projected through the introverted edges of said plate secured to the side of the ferrule of the lather brush; the introverted edges of said plate curved toward the medial line of said plate substantially as described.

4. The combination of a lather brush with a holder; an adjustable arm therefor attached thereto; a means on said lather brush for adjustably securing said arm in connection therewith.

5. A lather brush comprising a brush head or ferrule; a knot of bristles or hair projecting from one end of said brush head and a handle projecting from the opposite end thereof, provided with an arm adjustably attached to its side; said arm having at its outer end a holder adapted to receive soap in any of its forms.
