To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, SAMUEL BETTIGOLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candlesticks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in candle-sticks or candle-holders, the object being to provide means for firmly supporting a candle and extinguishing the same when it burns down to the top of the candleholder; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

In illustrating my invention, I employ a candle-stick 2 which may be of any approved design and may be a single stick or a candelabrum. In the head 3 of the candleholder is a transverse groove or slot 4 in which

slides

5 and 6 are arranged to move transversely. At the center of their adjacent ends these slides are formed with downwardly projecting fingers 7 which, when the candle burns down, will come together and snufl the wick. Mounted in the head are levers 8 and 9 pivotally connected at their inner ends to the respective slides. Between them is arranged a spring 10 the tendency of which is to separate the outer ends of the fingers and force the inner ends of the slides together. These levers may be operated in any desired manner and may preferably and as herein shown, have fingerpieces 11 which extend down through slots 12 in the head. If desired the top of the candle-holder will be surmounted by a capplate 18 which covers the ends of the slides and the ends of the levers.

To insert the candle into the socket 14 the slides are separated and the candle placed between them, and these slides will hold and firmly support any size of candle up to the limits of the size of the socket. When the candle burns down to the socket or to a point just below the

5 and 6, the spring 10 will force the slides inward and extinguish the flame.

Instead of forming the head of the candlestick integral with the body or base 2,

it may be formed separately and provided with a plug 15, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, which plug is adapted to be entered into any candle-holder and permits one of the candles of the candelabrum to be removed if it is desired to do so temporarily.

I claim 1. The combination with a candle-holder having a head with a candle-receiving socket, of two transverse slides arranged within the head and each formed with centrally arranged fingers extending downwardly into the said socket, levers mounted in said head and engaged with said slides whereby the said slides may be moved, and a spring tending to force the inner ends of the slides together.

2. The combination with a candle-holder having a head formed with a candle-receiving socket and with a transverse groove, of two slides arranged within said groove and each formed at their inner ends with fingers projecting downward into said socket, two levers pivotally mounted in the head and having engagement with said slides, said levers formed at their outer ends with finger-pieces, a spring between thelevers and tending to force the inner ends of the levers and slides together, and a cap plate secured to said head over said slide.
