Description

lrited' Statut @met @bibitem Letters Patent No. 101,220, dated lila/rch 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N SHBARS.
The Schedule .referred to in there Lettera Patent and making part of the lame To all whom it 'may' concern Be it known that I, JAMES BOOTH, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Adj ustable Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvement in adjusting apparatus for book-binders, Aand other shears for cutting broad sheet-s, and consists in the application, in the axis of the hollow hub, of the moveable shear-arm of an adjustiug'center block, on which it is suspended by center pins, and against which center screws tapped through the hub work in a manner to adjust the hub and shear-arm, all as hereinafter more fully specified. Figure 1 is an end elevation of mv improved shea's, and
Figure 2 is a plan view sectioned through the hub.
A is tbe'bed, and
B the stationary cutter fixed thereto;
C is the vibrating cutter, and`Dthe hub thereof.
This hub has a 'large axial hole at right angles to 'the cutting-edge, in which a-c'entering block, E, is
arranged so as to vibrate in the plane of the cuttingbed A, or in a plane parallel thereto, and fitted with sockets in the ends for the reception of the centering- Apins F. This block is narrower than the axial hole of the hub in the horizontal direct-ion,-and has a convex or other suitably-formed projection G, at the center on one side, and set-screws, H, are tapped through the wall of' the hub against it on the other side, by which the hub and the blade, C, may be adjusted to right or lett as required, the block E being confined between the centers, so that the movable blade may be adjusted to a parallel position with the fixed cutter in a ready and simple manner.
AThe said blade, C, may be. adjusted wholly to or from.
the fixed cutter by the centers F. A set-screw, I," is tapped through the hub against the upper face ofthe block E, to prevent any movement of it relatively to the hub in that direction, and for clamping it tightly in place after the adjustment.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with the hub of the movable knife ot' the adjusting centering-block E, and the setscrew H, substantially -as specitied.
2. The combination with the hub D, and tue adjusting-block E, ofthe set-screw I, substantially as specilied.
The above specification ot' my invention signed by me this 3d day ot' February, 1870.
JAMES BOOTH.
