Be it known that I, J AMES H. SWINDELL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residin at Atgtate of Enve op; and. I do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact descri t-ion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same' Thisin'vention relates to a new and useful envelop.
The main object of the invention is to pro vide .an improved device of this nature, so
constructed that the same cannot be unsealed and opened Without detection.
Another object of the invention is to provide an envelop having a bottom flap, the end portion of which is folded upon itself, for reinforcing a strap (which is defined by long and short registering slots in the folded portion: of the bottom fla The closure flap (w on both sides thereof) is designed to be passed through the slots, with the tip folded ack over the strap and secured between the strap and the clo'sure flap. The envelop is provided with side flaps, upon-one end of each of which the closure flap is folded.
A further objectof the invention is the provision of"- an envelop adapted particularly for use, where large envelops are required, thus cheapening the same by eliminating he usual metal clamp or rivet generally used.
The invention comprises further features and combination of arts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the d i'awings and claimed.
In the dra'wingsz.Figure 1 is a view in perspective of an envelop constructed in accordance with the invention. plan view of the envelop showing the closure flap and the tip aspassed through the slo s beneath the strap. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the tip folded back over the strap and secured between the strap and the closure strap. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is aplan view of the blank of the envelop.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the addressed portion of the envelop. The addressed portion of the iich is provided wit 1 a tip gummed' Fig. 2 is e.
envelop is provided'with sideflaps 1', shottom flap 1 and a. closure flap 5. tom flap 1 is folded upon itself at the point patented Dec. 19, 1".ei1.
The botdesignated by the character 1, thus roviding a reinforcing section 2 for the ottom flap. Thereinforcing-sect-ion 2 is provided with slots 3 and 4, as shown clearly in Fig. 5. The reinforced portion 2' of the bottom flap (which is folded u on the addressed portion 1? when the enve op is constructed) is provided with a strap 7 which is defined by the slots 3 and 4'; The slots 3 are longer than the slots 4; The closure fla 5 is provided with an extension ti 6, the rec portion of which is gummed on 0th sides.
When constructing an envelo of t-his'nzv ture, the bottom flap, is folde upon itself at the point 1, so that theslots 3' and 4' in the body of the bottom flap and theslotsS and 4 in the folded portion are brought into registration, thus forming a reinforced portion for the bottom flap. The bottom flap is then folded at a upon the addressed portion 1', then the side flaps 1 are folded over and gummed to the bottom flap. The closure flap 5 is left free, untilthe envelop is desired for use.
\Vhenit is desiredto seal the envelop, the closure fla with its .tip 6 is first assed through the slot 3 and then through t e slot 4, as shown in Fi 2. In folding the closure flap the same olds upon one end of each -of the side flaps, as shown at 8 in Figs. 2
and 3. The extension tip 6 is subsequently folded back' over the strap 7, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and finally secured between the strap 7 and the body of the closure flap.
The invention having been set forth, whatis claimed as new and useful is 2- A safety envelop com rising a bodyportion' having bottom and closure flaps, and
side flaps folded upon and secured to the bottom flap along its sides, said bottom flap.
being folded upon itself adjacent the mouth of the envelop, with the folded portion beneath the side fla .s, registering slots cut in said folded portion and the bottom flap forming a strap between the slots, one of the registering slots being long and the other short, said closure flap having an extension tip gummed on oth sides thereof, said closure flap and the extension tip adapted to pass throu h the long and short regis- In testimony whereof I have signed my tering slots and eneath the strap, which is name to this specification in the presence of defined by the, slots, with the extension tip two subscribin witnesses. folded back over the strap, and finally in-' JAM S HENRY SWINDELL. serted in the long registering slots, and se- Vitnesses:
