To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT K. H'URs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GarmentJVaist Adjusters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment waist adjusters. Its object is to provide a device to be attached to the waist of a pair of trousers or a skirt which will permit the circumference of the waist to be readily adjusted so that the garment will at all times fit perfectly.

A further'object is to eliminate the necessity of using a belt or suspenders in connection with a pair of trousers by.causing the garment to fit so perfectly at the waist that it will be sustained by the hips of the wearer.

Finally the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will be strong, durable, simple and efiicient and comparatively easy to construct, and one that cannot work or pull loose from its various positions of adjustment.

WVith these and various other objects in view my invention has relation to certain novel features of the construction and operation an example of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view showing sufficient of the waist portion of a garment to make clear the manner of attaching the hereindescribed device, the outer surface of the garment being shown. Fig. 2 is a view showing the device attached to a similar portion of a garment, the inner face being shown, or that portion which comes adjacent to the body of the wearer.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing wherein like letters of reference designate similar parts in all the figures, the letter A denotes the waist portion of a gar ment which garment may be either a pair of trousers, or a skirt. A slit or aperture B is provided in the garment extending downwardly from the waist line thereof. This slit will preferably be located at one side of the garment, a similar slit being provided at the other side which will be used in conjunction with a similar attachment. One of the pivotally connected members which compose the device consists of two integral arms C and D. This member is to be mounted upon the outer surface of the garment at the rear of the slit B. The longer vertical arm C is positioned adjacent to the edge of the slit and the shorter arm D is provided with an angle in its lower portion, which makes the greater part of its length radial with the lower extremity of the arm G. Each of the arms C and D are provided with an offset or raised portion E equidistant from the lower extremity of the arm C and each arm is also provided with a plurality of perforations F through which are passed the stitches which attach the device to the garment. The other member of the device consists of an elongated arm G which is pivotally connected to the lower extremity of the arm C and is provided with a hook H on its upper portion, which hook is adapted to engage either of the offsets E. W hen the hook H engages the offset E of the vertical arm 0 the waist of the garment will have its natural circumference. In order to reduce this circumference the arm G will be swung about its lower extremity and the hook H will engage the offset portion E of the arm D.

A special form of connection is employed between the two component members of the device. The lower extremity of each member is given a circular shape and is provided with a spiral slit extending to the center. The slit portion is then slightly raised on one member and slightly lowered on the other so that two hooks J are thus formed which are adapted to engage each other. In the center of each circular lower portion is a small aperture K through which a stitch may be passed after the device has been affixed to the garment. This type of pivotal connection is employed in order that the two component members may be separately secured to the garment, a connection between the two being established later. This will make it less awkward to sew the device in place and also will facilitate the work of turning them out in quantities since one workman may be attaching one member to a quantity of the garments while another workman is securing the other member to other garments.

importanteconomy is thus accomplished by doing away with suspenders, belts, belt i straps, buckles and suspender buttons.

The amount of adjustment attorded for either a skirt or a pair of trousers will de pend largely upon the size of the device. When the device is designed for use upon a skirt the two upright arms U and G will be of a much greater length than when applied to a pair ot trousers. This is to permit a considerable adjustn'ient in the circumference of the waist of the skirt so that the 1 no possibility of a jerk or abrupt movement causing the clasp to loosen.

\Vhat I claim is:

In a device of the character described, the combination with a garment having a slit extending downwardly from the waist line, of a vertical arm attached to the garment at one side of said slit haying an offset in its upper portion and a hook at its lower extremity a supplementary arm extending at right angles and then diagonally from the first named arm. thev diagonal portion of the said. arm being provided with an otl'set radial with the lower extremity of the first arm and located at an equal distance therefrom with the other offset, a third arm secured to the garment at the other side of said slit provided with a hook on its lower extren'lity remoi'ably engaging the aforesaid hook carried by the first arm, and a hook secured to the upper portion of the third arm adapted. to engage either ot said otTsets.
