Letters Patent No. 101,161, dated M arch 22, 1870.
- IMPROVE!) SPRING PQR BED-BOTTOMS.
l The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all who-m. it may concern:
Be it known .that I, Josera H. PorTs, of Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain lnew and useful Improvements in Springs forBed-Bottoms, Upholsterinf. &c.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of refererence marked thereon making a part of this specilication.
lhe nature of my invention consistsin the construction of a spring for bed-bottoms, upholsteling, &c., and in the manner of arranging them together.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invent-ion appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal Vert-ical section of a bed with my improved spring, andl Figure 2' is a plan view, showing the manner in which the springs are attached together.
A represents the' bedstead, and B the mattress, resting upon a series of spiral springs G O. These springs are made of the usual spring wire, narrower at the. bottom, and gradually'increasing in diameter to ythe top, and then wound spirally within the outer ring,
forming a dat surface on'top.
- The springs C C are attached together, as seen in fig. 2, by means of loops a slipped around the wire.
The flat surfaceof each spring forms afspring independent ofthe other portion, causing the spring to lit. in all 'the inequalities oi' the body, dispensing with all hair, gnnny sucking, twine, 86e., to form the bed-bottom, and consequently makes no place for hed-bugs.
I do not confine myself t0 the particular shape shown in t-he drawings. They can be modified and ina-de square, or any other shape, instead of round; also, so as to present a ilat'suri'ace on top. Also, the end ol the wire in the center can be continued down into a second spiral spring, supporting the center.
For any kind of upllolstering this springis valuable, as it requires less covering, and hence. will be less expensive.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim new, and desire to secure by Lotters Patent, isl The springs C, with a flat surface, coiled to the center ti'om the outer ring, and arranged to form a 'hedbottom, with their upper edges touching, and connected hy the loops a, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of December, 1869.
JOSEPH H. POTTS. [L s.]
