RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.
Application filed March 8, 1911. Serial No. 613,023.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. REINHARDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago. county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RaiLJoints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements ina rail section constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the rail sections, Fig. 4, a vertical section taken on the line w-m, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of .the rail-joint.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises similar rail sections 1 having their abutting ends formed without Webs so that the upright portion thereof is of a uniform thickness in cross section as shown. Each of the sections 1 is formed with a projecting tongue 2 and a recess 3 adapted to receive the tongue on the other section as indicated. 'A retaining abutment 4: is formed on the flange of each rail section adjacent the corresponding recess and serves to position, and secure from lateral displacement, the tongue resting in the corresponding recess. The tongues Q are secured together by means of bolts 5 passed therethrough as shown, said bolts servin to secure said rails against longitudina and lateral displacement, being reinforced in the latter function by the abut-- ments 4. The joint thus formed constitutes a firm and rigid connection between the rail sections and will permit the running of trains thereover without noise or vibration.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect this may be capable of variations and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A rail-joint comprising rail sections having each. of their abutting ends formled without webs and provided with a tongue and a recess, the tongue on one rail section being adapted to fit the recess on the other, a retaining abutment formed on the flange of each rail section adjacent the corresponding recess; and bolts passed through said tongues, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- HENRY J. REINHARDT.
