RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented am. ai, raie.
Application filed January 4, 1916. Serial N o. 70,148.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT I-I. HoLDA- WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conran, in the county of New Madrid and Sta-te of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in joints for railway rails and the like, the object of the invention being to effect improvements in the construction of the ends of railway track rails so that a joint may be readily formed between them which will prevent the rail ends from pounding or moving vertically, unevenly, under the weight of passing trains and will also prevent the rails from spreading and from moving lengthwise.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure l is a perspective of the meeting ends of a pair of rails joined in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one rail end. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the other rail end. Fig. 4C is a vertical transverse sectional View on the plane indicated on the lineA-A of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the plane indicated on the line B-B of Fig. l.
The rails 1 may be of any suitable construction and each is here shown as having a base 2, a web 3 and a head 4.
In accordance with my invention, each rail is formed at the ends with an extension 5 which, at one end of one of the rails, is at the base thereof andL at the meeting end of the other rail is at the head thereof, so that the said extensions are arranged in overlapping relation to form a joint between the rails, as shown in Fig. l. Each rail is provided at one end with a longitudinal horizontal recess 6 and its extension is provided at the outer end with a corresponding projection 7 to fit in the recess 6 of the meeting rail, said recesses and projections locking the rail ends and preventing them from pounding or moving vertically independently of each other under the weight of passing trains. Each extension is also formed, near the outer end, with an upwardly extending projection 8 and is also formed near one end with a downwardly'extending recess 9 to receive` the pro" of the extension of the meeting rail and the lug l0a extends downwardly from the head extension of the meeting rail and extends to and is shaped to conform to the base thereof as shown and is on the side opposite the lug l0. These lugs are, in practice, preferably integral with the respective rails and are rolled therewith. l/Vhen the rail ends are spiked to the ties, the lugs 10, 10a prevent the rails from spreading. The joint thus formed between the rail ends is exceedingly strongand I entirely avoid the use of bolts and fish plates for securing the rail ends together. rIhe rail ends are readily interengaged to form a joint between them and may be readily unjoined after the spikes have been withdrawn.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
In a rail joint, a pair of rails, one having a head extension and the other having a base extension, said head extension bearing on the base extension and having a downwardly extending lug bearing against one side of the base extension, said base eXtension having an upwardly extending lug bearing against the other side of the head extension, each rail also having a vertical recess n its extension and a Vertical pro- In testimony whereof I affix my signature jection on its exltenson1 to enter the vertical in presence of two Witnesses. recess of the ot 1er mi extension, and each w rail also having a transverse longitudinal ROBERT H' HOLDAWAI' 5 recess in one end, and a, corresponding pro- Witnesses:
jecton at the other end of its extension to VALTER B. ELLIS, enter said recess of the other rail. N. B. HOPKINS.
