RAILWAY-RAIL JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13, 1914.
Application filed October 17, 1913. Serial No. 795,615.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL REINERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Temple, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway rail joints and the object is to pro vide a rail joint of comparatively simple construction in which proper support is given to the rail ends and in which provision is made for contraction and expansion of the rails due to climatic changes.
The invention consists of a pair of plates capable of being attached to opposite sides of the rails and having means for securing these plates together, including a base member attached to or formed integral with one of the plates, and passing beneath the rails.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a railway rail joint embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view, taken through line 22 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 designates the rail ends. These are provided with the usual bolt holes 2 and in each of these bolt holes I place a bushing 3, slightly longer than the thickness of the rail web, so that it projects slightly beyond both side surfaces of the web. The bolt openings in the bushings are somewhat larger than the bolts to permit movement of the rails in necessary expansion and contraction.
The numeral 4 designates the main securing plate and 5 the supplemental plate. The plate 4 is formed with a base member 6 which passes beneath the rail and on which the rail rests. This base member is formed at its extremity with two slotted projections 7 which are adapted to pass through openings 8 in the supplemental plate, on the opposite side of the rail. The base member is also formed with strengthening ribs 9 on the under side, to give proper support to the depending portions 10 of the side plates.
The projecting ends of the parts 7 are The bushings 3 fit tightly in the'bolt holes in the rail and are thus incapable of movement therein when the rails expand or contract. The side plates when in position, rest against the ends of these bushings and do not contact with the rail web, thus affording an easy movement during contraction or expansion without interfering with the securing means. The depending, interlocked portions of the side plates together with the base member on one of these plates will give the required support and rigidity to the rail ends and the result will be an efficient rail joint, secure at all times and yet free to move, in so far as the rails are concerned,
in a longitudinal direction within certain limits.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to. secure by Letters Patent A railway joint comprising a pair of se-.
curing plates, bolts for securing said plates to the rail ends, bushings carried by the rail ends to receive the bolts, the bushings having a greater length than the thickness of the rail portion through which they pass, one of said securing plates having a lateral extension underlying the rail ends and formed adjacent its edge with a reduced portion, the other of said plates having a depending portion formed with an opening to receive the first mentioned reduced portion, and a wedging key cooperating with the reduced portion beyond the plate formed with the opening, the length of the bushing forcing the securing plates apart at their upper edges to permit a slight angular relation of their lower portions, for more effective cooperation of the wedgingkey.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL REINERT.
