SWITCH STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 26, 1911. Serial No. 640,608.

Be it known that I, ELVEN ASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkley, in the county of Norfolk and State of Vir- Improvements in Switch Structures, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a special guard rail, and novel and peculiar means for holding such rail to the railway rails at the frog sections of an ordinary track and to furnish special spacing blocks for bracing the guard rails relative to the track rails. V
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a plan View of the frog portion of a railway track. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of a pair of rails showing a rail chair and wheel in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the rail chairs. Fig. 4 is an inverted perspective view of one of the blocks.
The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the practical application of my invention the ordinary railway rails 1 and frogs 2 are employed. The guide rails 3 consist of sections of ordinary railway rails having wheel-tread ends 4, which curve downwardly and inwardly from the rails 1. The rails 1 and the guide rails 3 are of the same, depth and they are connected together and secured to the ties 5, by means of special rail chairs 6, and since all of such chairs are of the same construction only one of them will be described in detail. Each chair comprises a pair of cars 7, which project upwardly from the top face of the chair and are of such shape as to fit the rail web between the rail tread and the rail flanges of the rails 1 and 3. The top face of the chair has two rail seats 8 and 9, and a slot 10 is formed between each of the ears 7 and the seats 8 and 9, respectively, for the outer flanges of the respective rails 1 and 3. The seat 8 is for the rails 1, and the seat 9 is dropped below the seat 8, by means of the shoulder 11, which forms a lateral abutment for the outer flange of the rails 8, and said'seat 9 holds the guard rails 3, below the for the purpose hereinafter more fully explained. The said block has a hole 16 therethrough for a tie bolt 17 which extends through theears 7 and the webs of the rails 1 and 3, and is provided with a nut 18 and nut-securing pin 19. The blocks 12 not only fill in the space between the rails 1 and '3 at the rail chairs, but such blocks form a substantial and rigid brace between the rails and also afford means for clamping the rails 1 and 3 between the rail chair ears by operating the tie bolts 17 It will be observed that the means (hereinbefore described) for holding the rails is such as to fix the guard rails 3 parallelwith the rails 1, and to position the guide rails on a plane below the plane of the rails 1..
I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to any particular material and size in the manufacture of my invention, nor to the application thereof to any particular railway track, but reserve to myself the right to make such changes in and various applications of my invention as may be found desirable or as occasion may demand without departing from the'scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described'my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is: p
1. The combination, with a railway track, of a guard rail connected with eachrail of the track, of seats therein, one of which is elevated above for holding the guard 7 and the blocks rail chairs having double rail rails below the plane of the track rails, ears projecting from the chairs with a slot be tween the ears and the seats for the inner flanges of the track rails and the guard rails,
and means for securing the chairs. Y
2. The combination, with a railway track, of a guard rail connected with each rail of the track, of rail chairs having double rail seats therein, one of which is dropped below the plane of the other for holding the guard rails below the plane of the track rails, brace blocks fitting the adjacent sides of the track rails and the guard rails opposite said seats, and means for securing the blocks and the chairs together and to all of said rails.
3. The combination, with railway track rails and guard rails for the switch sections of the track, of means for connecting the guard rails with the track sition the guard rails on a plane of the track rails, comprising rail chairs having a top face, a shoulder dividing the face into an upper and a lower rail seat, an ear extending inwardly from the face at the outer end of each seat with a slot between the ears and the respective seats, brace blocks having an angular bot-tom fitting the inner flange of the track rails and the inner flange of the guard rails, and a tie-bolt extending through the ears, the blocks and the webs of all of said rails.
