UNITED STATES PATENT @FFIQE.
ALVUS H. MOFFET, OF LARNED, KANSAS.
TIE STRUCTURE.
mimosa To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ALvUs H. Morrn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larned, in the county of Pawnee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tie Structures, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to railway tie structures, and while particularly intended for concrete ties, may be employed for those of other material.
The primary object is to provide a strong, tie, which will still have a slight yielding movement, so as to avoid breakage, and disintegration, said tie being furthermore constructed to prevent any danger of center binding.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that the structure is not limited to the exact arrangement disclosed.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the tie. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is a side elevation of one end portion. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the center section.
Similar reference numerals designate cor responding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment disclosed, a center section 6 is employed, with outer or end sections 7 located at the ends of said center section and abutted against the same. The center section 6has a downwardly tapered under side as shown at 8, while the end sections preferably have substantially flat bottoms 9. Formed in the opposite sides of the sections, are alined grooves 10, and one of the end sections has a corresponding transverse groove 11. A yoke 12, formed from a bar orrod, has its opposite sides seated in the grooves 10 with the transverse end portion located in the groove 11. The ends of this yoke may be of various forms, but in the embodiment disclosed, they are provided with terminal hooks or ears 13 that project beyond the end of the tie opposite to that having the groove 11. Located on said ears and abutted against the adjacent end of the tie is a link 14, and wedges 15 driven through the ears 13, abut against the link and insure its binding action against the tie, thus effectively securing the sections in as sembled position.

tions, as shown at any desired point, and are secured in place by any suitable means, indicated conventionally at 16.
With this structure, it will be noted that the end sections 7 may be properly tamped, so that the tie can be just balanced without regard to the center section 6. This center section because of its tapered underside, will not bind between the rails, and consequently breakage due to this objection is avoided.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tie, comprising a body, a yoke'consisting of a continuous bar extending longitudinally of the body and around one end of the same, and means connecting the ends of the yoke at the other end of the body.
2. A tie, comprising a plurality of body sections, a yoke comprising a continuous bar extending longitudinally of the body and around one end of the same, and means connecting the ends of the yoke at the other end of the body for clamping the sections together.
3. A tie, comprising a plurality of body sections having longitudinal grooves in their opposite sides, and means embracing the sections and engaged in the grooves for securing said sections together.
ft. A tie, comprising a plurality of sec tlons, a yoke surrounding the sections, a cross plece engaging the ends of the yoke, and means mounted on said ends and engaglng the cross piece for drawing the sections tightly together.
5. A tie, comprising a plurality of sections arranged end to end and having longitudinally alined grooves in their opposite sides, a yoke surrounding the sections and engaged in the grooves, said yoke having its ends projecting beyond one end of the tie, a cross piece mounted on the projecting ends and abutted against the adjacent end of the tie, and means mounted on the projecting ends of the yoke and engaging the cross piece for clamping the same against the tie.
6. A tie, comprising a plurality of sections, a yoke surrounding the sections, a link surrounding the ends of the yoke, and devices for securing the link on said ends.
7. A tie, comprising a plurality of sections arranged end to end, a yoke extending longitudinally of the sections and surrounding the same, said yoke having terminal eyes, a link arranged at one end of the tie and surrounding the eyes, and Wedges passing through the eyes and engaging against the link.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
