To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. -Mrrcn- ELL, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Itail- Anchors, of which I do declare the followmg to be a full, clear, and exact description, re erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificaion.
The present invention has relation more particularly to rail anchors of that type in which the anchor or a member thereof is connected with the railway rail by a fused or welded joint. Examplesof this type of real anchor are shown in various Letters Patent granted to me under date of July.
31, .1917, and October 23, 1917. The present invention consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification. v
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a part of a railwayrail and several of the railway track ties with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the part shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical cross section centrally through the fused or welded stud. Fig. 4c is a perspective view of a portion of a railway rail showing a modified form of the invention applied thereto. Fig. 5 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modified form of the invention. Fig. 6 is a plan view showin a further modification of the invention. Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing a modification of the invention.
A designates a railway rail having the usual base flanges a and B denotes the cross ties of the track upon which the rail A rests, the rail being held to the ties by spikes Z) inthe usual manner.
Referring more particularly to the em bodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, C designates a lug or bar that is fused or welded to one of the base flanges a of the rail A. In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4: of the drawings, a lug or bar C is shown as fused or welded at of to the edge of the base flange a of the rail A and in this form ofthe invention, the lug or bar C has its outer end bifurcated or formed as a yoke to receive the longitudinal bar E which parallelsthe base flange a of the rail A. The bolt D isshoWn as passing through the bar E and through the jaws of the lug or bar C to securely hold these parts together. With this form of my invention, the central portion of the longitu dinal bar E need not be bent or ofl'set.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the lug joint e. In this form of the invention, as
in that illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the longitudinal or tie-engaging bar E is directly opposite and in the plane of the base flange a of the rail A.
In Fig. 7, I have shown the base flange a of the rail A as provided with a slotted lug or bar (3*, the inner end of which is fused or welded to the edge of the rail, as shown in Patent No. 1,24A,356, granted to me October 23, 1917. Across this lug or bar (1* extends the longitudinal or tie-engaging bar E that is provided with a hole 6 to receive a spike, wood screw or bolt,
tended any desired distance to pass over other cross ties and this bar will be provided with suitable holes to receive spikes for attachment of the bar E to the cross ties. The central portion of the bar E is slightly oifset to enable it to pass across the lug or bar 6. I prefer that the tieengaging bar or member that will be spiked to the ties shall be formed as a flat bar and that the central portion of the bar that will be connected with the base flange of the rail shall be flat, as by such construction of bar a bending of the central portion of the tie-engagin bar at right angles to the end portionso? the bar, as in my Patent No. 1,235,495, dated July 31, 1917, is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a railway rail, of a tie-engaging bar extending at one side of a base flange of the rail'and having a flat longitudinally disposed central portion at one side of the base flange of the rail and connected thereto by a part or member fuse or welded to said base flange.
2. A rail anchor comprising a stud or flange fused or welded to the base flange of the rail at its edge, and a tie-engaging bar having its ends extendin parallel with and in the plane of the base ange of the rail at one side thereof, the central portion of said tie-engaging bar extending horizontally and across said stud or projection and connected thereto.
3. A rail anchor comprising a stud or projection fused or Welded to the base flange of the rail, and a tie-enga ing bar arranged at one side of the base ange of the rail and extending parallel therewith and in the plane of said base flange substantially from end to end, said bar being connected to said stud or projection.
4. A rail anchor comprising a stud or projection fused or welded to the base flange of the rail at its edge, and a tie-engaging bar arranged at one side of the base flange of the rail and extending across said stud or projection and detachably connected thereto.
5. A rail anchor comprising a stud or projection fused or welded to the base flange of the rail at its edge, and a tie-engaging bar arranged at one side of the base flange of the rail and having a horizontal central portion extending across said stud or projection and detachably connected thereto, one of said parts being arranged out of the plane, of the base flange of the rail where it crosses the other of said parts.
