GUARD-BOARD FOR COUCH-ROLLS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JAMEs MOFFETT and CHARLES C. CLU'roH, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Guard-Boards for Couch-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in guard boards for couch rolls, and has for its object to construct a guard board for cleaning couch rolls of paper material to permit the adjustment of the ends thereof regardless of the adjustment of the center of the guard board, by constructing a guard board having an adjustment of this character which permits that portion of the board intermediate its ends to be adjusted independent of the end portions, or vice versa.

Then the width of the paper is less than the length of the couch roll, it is not necessary to use a very heavy pressure at the ends of the guard board, which pressure increases the Wear of the boarders of the felt jacket on the upper roll and guard board. The guard boards in general use are either adjusted throughout their entire length, equalizing the pressure upon the couch roll whether the entire length of said roll is being used or not. WVhile other guard boards are adjusted at their ends and must be drawn down against the roll very central portion of the guard board will exert the desired pressure upon the roll.

By the use of our improvement the end portions of the guard board may be minutely adjusted to cause the desired pressure upon the roll, either at its central portion or at the ends.

W'ith these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertain's may understand how to nzake and use the same, we will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l, is a front elevation of our improved guard board, a portion thereof being Specification of Letters Patent.

In carrying out our invention as here embodied, (1) represents the couch roll having the usual jacket or felt covering 2.

3 denotes a suitable support extending parallel with the couch roll and carrying the guard board 4. To the support 3 is fastened the body 5 of the guard board, which is of any suitable size and shape, preferably formed of wood.

The ends of the body are beveled inward and downward as at 6 for some distance, leaving a straight edge 7 intermediate the beveled portion. To this straight edge is permanently attached the central portion of the wiper strip 8,- leaving the ends adjacent the beveled portion (i free to be adjusted. The wiper strip 8 may be formed of any suitable material but is preferably wood, having a sufficient amount of elasticity to permit of the ends being raised out of alinement with the central portion, and as the adjustment required is very slight, the movenent of the ends will be but a short distance.

Passing through the guard board adjacent its ends, are a pair of threaded rods 9, having a hand wheel or its equivalent 10 mounted on its upper end. As shown to the left of Fig. 1, the rod may be anchored within the guard board by a nut 11 inserted in the aperture 12 in the guard board, said nut being mounted upon the rod and engaging the upper wall of the aperture 12. Another form of anchorage is shown to the right of Fig. l, in which the hand wheel 10 is shown as swiveled in a block 13, mounted upon the upper edge of the guard board, the hand wheel being threaded upon the rod 9. The lower ends of the rods are fastened to the ends of the wiper strip as indicated at 14, so that when the rods are operated the ends of the wiper strip will be drawn upward or forced downward against the couch roll or the wiper strip may be made so that when the pressure is relieved from the wiper strip, the ends will spring upward toward the body so that it will not be required to fasten the ends of the rods to the ends of the wiper strip.

It will be understood that the guard board is covered with a jacket of felt or other suitable material, similar to the jacket upon the couch roll.

Of course we do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of our invention.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful is 1. A guard board comprising a body having portions of its lower edge beveled, leaving a straight edge between said beveled portion, a wiper strip secured to said straight edge, and means for adjusting the free ends of the wiper strip.

2. A guard board for couch rolls comprising a body, a wiper strip having a por tion intermediate its ends permanently secured to the lower edge of the guard board, and means for adjusting the ends relative to the couch roll.

8. A guard board comprising a body having its lower edge beveled inward from its ends, forming a straight edge intermediate said beveled portions, a wiper strip of elastic material permanently secured to the straight edge, threaded rods passing through the guard board and engaging the ends of ing its lower edge beveled inward from its ends, forming a straight edge intermediate said beveled portions, a wiper strip of the same length as the body, the portion intermediate its ends being securely fastened to the straight edge of the body, the ends overlapping the beveled edges, threaded rods passing through the guard board adjacent its ends, and attached to the ends of the wiper strip, and swiveled hand wheels threaded upon said rods for revolving the rods to adjust the ends of the wiper strip.
