SMOOTHING DEVICE FOR WET PAPER WEBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Original application filed October 8, 1913, Serial No. 794,101. Divided and this application filed March 23,
1914. Serial No. 826,701.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON R. l/VAGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoothing Devices for Wet Paper .Vebs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper-making apparatus, and it resides in the production of a smoothing device which is specially designed for use in connection with, or as a part of, the improved winding mechanism shown and described in my Patent No. 1,117,114, granted November 10, 1914, of which the present case is a division.
The object of the said device is to remove all wrinkles, puckers, creases and the like in the wet web during its passage from the size bath to the winding drum, and from the latter to the reel, as well as to avoid crushing during such time, so that the web is ultimately wound upon the reel in a perfectly smooth condition.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a fragmental side elevation of the aforementioned winding mechanism and its associated smoothing device; and Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views of the winding drum and the spreader, respectively, these two elements presenting the improved means whereby the desired smoothing action is obtained.
Referring more particularly to said drawing, 1 indicates the strip or web of wet paper as it comes from the size bath (not shown), 3 the spreader, 2 the winding drum located immediately in front of the spreader, and 4 the reel to which the web is fed from the said drum, the spreader and drum being specially constructed with a view to effecting the object stated above, and the latter being driven from some suitable source of power. The reel is held against the drum by a support 9. To this end, the spreader embodies members 5 and 6, disposed at an angle to each other and, likewise, to the horizontal, and, in the form illustrated, comprises a plurality of such members arranged in spaced, parallel relation and connected together at their ends by supporting bars 7 which are themselves supported in any desired manner. Preferably, each pair of members 5 and 6 are in- -diately in front of and adjacent tosaid tegral, or, in other words, are formed by a single V-shaped rod or bar, so that the spreader as a whole has a rack-like construction, as will be understood, the bars 7 constituting the end-pieces of such rack. The. surface of the drum 2 is formed with grooves 8, the shape and arrangement of which are similar to those of the rack bars 5.6. The two sets of angular bars and grooves have their apices pointing in the direction of movement of the web, 2'. 6., toward the winding reel 4, and in consequence of their particular arrangement, they exercise a spreading and smoothing ac tion upon the web from its central portion outward toward its marginal edges. Also, the spaces between the bars and grooves permit fine wrinkles and creases in the web to enter thereinto, thus avoiding crushing of the web during its passage between the drum and the reel.
I claim 1. In apparatus for treating wet paper web, the combination, with web-winding mechanism; of a device arranged immewinding mechanism and embodying a member with which the wet web is in continuous contact throughout its entire width, said member comprising portions lying wholly in a plane parallel with the plane of the web and disposed to form with each other an angle whose apex extends in the direction of movement of the web, so as to exert a spreading and smoothing action upon the web from its central portion outward toward its marginal edges just before said web reaches said winding mechanism.
2. In apparatus for treating wet paper web, the combination, with web-winding mechansm; of a device arranged in front of and adjacent to said winding mechanism and with which the wet web is in continuous contact throughout its entire width, said device comprising a plurality of angular members lying wholly in a plane parallel with the plane of the web and having their apices extending in the direction of movement of the web, so as to exert a spreading and smoothing action upon the web from its central portion outward toward its marginal edges.
3. In apparatus for treating wet paper web, the combination, with a winding drum; of a device arranged immediately in front of and adjacent to said drum in a plane substantially tangential to the periphery of said drum; said device embodying a member comprising portions lying wholly in a plane parallel with the plane of the wet Web and disposed to form with each other an angle whose apex extends in the direction of movement of the web, so as to exert a spreading and smoothing action upon the web from its central portion outward toward its marginal edges just before said Web reaches said drum.
4. In an apparatus for treating wet paper web, the combination, with web-winding mechanism; of a web-spreading rack arranged adjacent to said mechanism for acting on said web prior to Winding, said rack embodying a series of bars having convergent angular portions arranged in spaced parallel relation.
5. In an apparatus for treating wet paper web, the combination, With web-winding mechanism; of a Web-spreading rack ar ranged adjacent to said mechanism for action on said web prior to winding, said rack embodying a series of angular members arranged in spaced, parallel relation and inclined downwardly toward the winding mechanism. e
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set ny hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
