To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT H. GREGG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Upper Montclair, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Box-Fasteners, of which thefollowing is a specification, accompanied by drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices, adapted to be applied to a structure having a movable member to be fastened in closed position on the body portion, as a cigar box, in which it is desired to provide means for readily and'conveniently fastening the cover closed and drawing it tightly to the body of the box, although the invention may be applied to any suitable structure or used in any connection in which it is found applicable.

One object of the invention is to improve upon the construction of such fastening devices, simplify the parts, and produce a compact device adapted to draw the lid or cover of a box tightly down upon the body, so that with a closely fitting lid, a box may be made practically air-tight.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device which lies substantially fiat against the structure to which it is applied without having outwardly extending parts which are apt to become broken in use or which would interfere with packing the structures side by side, as for instance, cigar boxes or other receptacles adapted to be packed in large quantities.

To all these ends the invention consists of a fastening device embodying the features of construction, substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fastening device embodying the invention shown applied to a box, which is broken away for convenience of illustration; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1, partly in section, on the line 22.

Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown applied to a box which may be a cigar box or other receptacle,.in which A represents the body portion and B the cover, adapted to be opened and closed.

The fastening device is provided with a hasp comprising a suitable attaching piece C and a latch piece D suitably pivoted thereto. The attaching piece C may be provided with the tabs T or other suitable devices for fastening said piece C to the cover B of the box. In this instance the attaching piece C is cut away centrally and provided with the rolled ears E while the latch piece D is provided with the rolled tongue F forming the hinge barrel. The hinge pin F passes through the loops E and barrel F, although it is to be understood that any other suitable form of hinge or pivotal connection may be provided between the attaching piece C and the latch piece D, and I have shown the hinge connection in the drawings by way of illustration only. The latch piece D is bent or offset laterally beyond the pivot at the portion G forming a shoulder at the point H. A locking device, preferably inthe form of a cam J is pivoted onsaidoffset portion of the latch piece D inside of or beneath the shoulder H, as by means of the pin or rivet K. The cam J as shown is provided with the outwardly extending locking lever L to enable the cam to be readily manipulated. The latch piece D is preferably provided with a boss 0 for a reason to hereinafter appear and the cam J as shown is preferably pivoted on the'boss O.

A locking plate Q, is adapted to be secured to the body portion A of the box or receptacle as by means of the tabs R and this locking plate is provided with a retaining lip S adapted to cooperate with the cam J. As shown, the locking plate Q is mounted on the body portion A of the box adjacent or opposite to the position assumed by the cam J when the latch piece D is moved to its downward or looking position. When the locking lever L is turned upward as indicated in Fig. 1, the high portion of the cam J bearing under the retaining lip S forces the latch piece D downwardly and tightly closes the cover B of the box, maintaining said cover in closed position. The boss 0 of the latch piece D affords clearance for the outer edge T of the lip S, so that said outer edge of the lip may extend slightly beyond the face of the cam J. This outer edge T of the lip S is preferably bent downwardly, so that the latch piece can neither move upwardly nor outwardly when in locked position. To release the latch piece the locking lever L is turned downwardly, thus releasing the upward pressure under the lip S and permitting the latch .piece to be swung outwardly.

One important feature of the invention resides in the fact that the cam affords sufficient play between the parts of the device to compensate for warping of the box or cover, so that the cover may always be drawn tightly down upon the body, under substantially all conditions.

It will be seen that the cam J and its lock ing lever S are located or mounted between the latch piece D and the body portion A of the box and thus not only protected from injury, but outwardly extending parts are avoided. The hasp comprising the portions C and I) lies substantially flat against the body portion of the box and permits the boxes to be packed closely side by side for shipment.

I am not to be understood as limiting the invention to the details of construction disclosed in this application, it being understood that I have illustrated one preferred form of the device for carrying out the invention.

I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:

1. In a fastening device, the combination of a hasp comprising an attaching piece and a latch piece pivoted thereto, a cam pivoted on the under side of the latch piece and provided with an outwardly extending locking lever, and a locking plate having a retaining lip cooperating with the cam and adapted to be mounted adjacent thereto.

2. In a fastening device, the combination of a hasp comprising an attaching piece and a latch piece pivoted thereto, said latch piece being bent or offset laterally beyond the pivot, forming a shoulder, a cam pivoted on said offset portion of the latch piece, inside of the shoulder, said cam having an outwardly extending locking lever, and a locking plate having a retaining lip cooperating with the cam and adapted to be mounted adjacent thereto.

3. The combination with a structure having a body portion and a movable member adapted to be opened and. closed, of a fastening device having a hasp comprising an attaching piece adapted to be fastened to the movable member, and a latch piece pivoted to said attaching piece, a cam pivoted to the under side of said latch piece, and adapted to lie between the latch piece and body portion of the structure, said cam having an outwardly extending locking lever and a locking plate adapted to be fastened to the said body portion of the structure opposite the cam and provided with a retaining lip cooperating with the cam to draw the movable member of the structure tightly closed.
