Specification of Letters Patent.
4 SHACKLE-S'IRAP.
Application filed June 23, 1909, Serial No. 503,842.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VASHINGTON IRVING Bonn-mo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danielson, in the-county of lVindhaul and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Shackle-Strap, of which the following is a Specification. 1
This inveiitioiirelates to a shackle or pick arm strap for looms particularly designed for use in connection with the shackles, stirrups or pick arms of looms of the types known as the Northrup and Draper looms.
The principal objects ofthe invention are to provide a wearing surface for the shackle strap that willhave a greater extent and daration than those of the plain leather. or canvas straps that have been used heretofore, and that will beof such a character as to take up a great deal of the vibration resulting from the propulsion of the pickerstick and shuttle; also to provide a construetioii particularly adapted for use with a made of cast iron, and having a stirruvery dim wearing surface and a solid back- 25- ing behind it. I
' Further ob ects and advantagesof the'inveiitioii will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompany-.
Figure l 'is a side view of a shackle strap I 2 is aplan; and Fig. 3 is a side view on enlarged scale of the shackle strap alone.
'Theinvention is shownf as applied to a shackle strap 10 adapted to be used in con-,
nection witlra cast iron, stirrup l1, s lug strap 12, and picker stick 13, the latter named feature being shown as of ordinary construction. The shackle strap 10 is shown as of a general U-shaped form and formed of a plurality of substantially conoentric' layers of canvas or similar fabric adhering to each other in compressed form. Through this strap at a-point near-the crotch passes a longitudinal rivet I l-which, strengthensthe shackle strap itself, but the principalobject 0f.'Wl1lCh is to securein 'posltioniaplug This plug is shown as consistingof. a plu- 50 "fabric all arranged with their edges inthe ralit of substantially concentric layers of.
twovert-ical side surfaces of the plug. The
surface layersat the rear extend alongthe The combination with, an oscillatory Patented Dec 5','1911..i j
surface 16 for'thestirrup, in this case of three to five tiniesthe durability of that se-" cured by plain leather. f
Itwill'be observed thatthejstirrup ll has an oscillatingmotion, and consequently the convex active facet'hereof instead of .delivering 'a blow to the plug l5 wears the surface thereof hype. swinging motion along the concave faeeidlt isfor this reason that the placingofthe fabriesin the way shown n Fig. 3 is more effective than it would be if the wearing surface were'composed of the cutedges of the fabric. This invention applies particularly to the shackle strap. Be-
cause of t-hisact-ion of thestirrup the effect is very dilferent from that on the lug strap -which engages the picker with a direct normal blow.
As the plug wears theinner parallel layers -are exposed and the surface re mainsoori cave so that it does not readily get out-of shape. :It is frequently desired to use cast ironstirrups, and the plurality of concave layeis of fabric in and back of the wearing a surface 16 are located in the positionindicated inFig. 3, because inthis'waythey present a firmer surface'and a more solid backing. than would otherwise be obtained.
This is particularly advantageous when a heavy stirrup is employed, especially a cast iron one.
. Q IVhileI have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention,"I.
am aware that many modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the v artwithoutdeparting from the scope of -t he invention as expressed inthe claim. Therefore I do notwish to be liiiiited to all the de-'- tails 'of constructionshown and described, but
Vhat I do claim is:,.
rup having a convex active face, of a strap thereforcomprising a loop of resilient vex face, said plug consisting of a plurality of layers of compressedfabric adhering to each other, said layers being arranged; in two I V i 105.
connected concave. sets, those of eachsetbein'g parallel with each other, theo'utside ones of one set fitting in the U-shaged end of the my hand, in the presence of two subscribing 100p, and those of the other 'set substantially witnesses. fitting said convex face, whereby the latter outside layer will be worn along their WASHINGTON IRVING BULLARD' 5 fibers by the oscillatory motion of said face Witnesses:

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set LOUIS W. SOUTHGATE.
