Description

JNM/Mz- N PETERS, PHOYO-LITHOGRABHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
Odinited mes @anni ctiiiiiw.
SAMUEL SHAWOROSS, OF FREEP'ORT, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent It' 101,052, dated .March 22, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same `To whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL Suawonoss, of Freeport, Stephenson county, Illinois, have -invented a new and useful device called an Adjustable Coat-Pattern, for determining au accuratepattern for a coat on the person of the customer'. .'Ihe bllowing is a description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
I construct this device of firmly-woven cloth or other pliable material in seven sepa-rate parts, more or less, corresponding to the several `part-s of an ordin- Figures l represent the left side fore part;
Figures 2, the left-side side-body;
Figure 3, the back; and
Figure 5, the left skirts.
I work on the fore parts and side bodies a series of lines of stitches A, figs. l, 2, and 4, along the shoulder, waist, side, and back-seams, marked A rcspectively. 4
I also attach a number of hooks, f, iigs. 2, 3, and 4, along the side-seams on side-bodies, shoulder, aml back-scams on lback and waist-scams on skirts.
The fore parts are provided with gol-es, iig. l, in the upper and lower part r/ with straps and buckles h, also live metallic slides, L, along the arm size. Ihe side-body is also provided with one ot' these slides.
Guide-points M, tigs. I and 3, atshoulder-seams are made thirty-six size, breast mcasurr-l.
,I operate this device as follows :l
Previously to applying it to the person I attach the back by means of the hooksj'and stitches a atA shoulderfseams at or near the guide-points M, figs. 1 and 3, being governed by the relative. size of the person; it' smaller than thirty-six, breast measure, the
guide-points ou back are brought below correspond ing points ou fore parts, and if'larger, above.
I then attach the side-bodies to fore parts similarly by means et these hooks and stitches.
'Ihe parts-thus connected, the device is now placed upon the person and its balance secured. I --uowconnect the back by same means to side bodies, and t-hen fasten in front by means of straps and buckles h h, determiningr breast and waist by means of the gores g, the edges of which are made to approach cach othc according to the conformation of breast.
I now fasten vthe side-bodies to fore parts, commencing under arm size, half-way down to waist-seam, then, seeing that the top of back reaches about-to the socket bone, I fasten it along shoulder-seams to fore parts andl then fasten sidesol' back to side-bodies which are kept snug to the form with the hand, altering the fastening process from one side to the other, so as to keep the center seam of back accurately in its place from socket to waist.
t New I measure from collar-seam to waist, along center ofback, marking the point at waist.
It' the gorge i on fore part does not come up under the chin enough, I make a mark on breast-igurej, and measure with the tape from the mark to point, where I design the ends of collar to meet, marking in figures on the device the distance indicated.
I now take a square and place its short arm between the crotch of pants with its long arm extended up the center oi' breast, and mark with the chalk along the upright arm of square, thereby determining ccntcr of breast.
Now I mark alongr the shoulder, waist, side and back-seams of one side of the device, and also along the gorge, from `back of nec-k to end ot collar, determining the collar-seam.
'Ihcn I connect the skirts to waist by means of hooks and stitches already described, and with it determine its drapery and style.
Lastly, I determine the sizc by means of the slides L, which are moved backward or forward, according to the sized size required. rIllley properly ai'ljusted, the pattern is accurately `obtained and ready to be transferred to paper, which -is done by laying the paper on a clot-h on a table, placing the device upon it, and pricking with a needle or other sharp inst-runnnit along the chalk marks and hooked edges through the paper, which, when marked and cut, as indicated by the needle pricks, is ready for the cloth.
Ihe foregoing is a lfull and specific description of my device; and
7Wha-t I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: A l l. The adjustablecoat-patterns, so constructed as to be capable of adjustn'ient to all forms and sizes, regular or irregular, and adapted to determine not only. the tit but the hang and balance of the garment, as herein set forth and shown.
2. 'Ihe series of hooks and loops ffand A A, in combination with the several patterns, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
3. Ihe adjustable slides L L, in combination with the main device, substantially as described and set forth.
