UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DIO LEVIS AND FANNIE L. GENERELLY, OF PRESCOTT, ARKANSAS.
FABRIC-TURFING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 444,545, dated January 13, 1891.
Application filed May 15, 1890. Serial No. 351,867. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DIO LEWIS and FAN- NIE L. GENERELLY, citizens of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Nevada and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric-Turfing Implements; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has relation to fabric-turfin g implements; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, this invention being an improvement on a similar instrument patented to Dio Lewis August 28, 1888, and numbered 388,422.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front face View of an apparatus embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a rear face View of the body of the implement. Fig. 3 is a rear face view of the impaler-arm, and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a loop attached to the bar A.
Our apparatus is constructed so that the operator can regulate the depth of the loop and length of the stitch, and is described as follows: A represents the main bar or body of the implement, and B represents the in1- paler-arm. Said body is provided with an upper slot a and a lower slot 70, and through the upper slot works a headed bolt 01., its smaller end being secured in the upper end of the impaler-arm B. Said bolt slides up and down in said slot a, carrying with it said impaler-arm, the length of said slot governing the extreme movements of said impalerarm. To said bar A is secured a loop (F, in the slot of which works the head of the threaded bolt a. Said loop is for the purpose of limiting the stroke of the impaler-arm when used on fine fabrics; butit is not intended to be used in working coarse fabrics.
O is a cuff rigidly attached to body A, and is provided with a set-screw c, adjusting and holding the needle 0' firmly in position.
D is a spring secured to the said body for the purpose of throwing the impaler cl to the needle after the impaler leaves the last loop 61.
E is a slot in the impaler-arm, commencing near its right-hand side and running parallel with the same for about three-quarters of an inch, then running at an angle downward nearly to the left-hand side and then parallel with the samefor about three-quarters of an inch, in which the turned-up end of said spring D works. This slot, in connection with the said spring, gives the step of the machine.
F is a nut on the left-hand side of the body A, in which works a screw f, which regulates the step of the machine, and on the other edge of the said body is an elevation G, having in it a needle-rest g and a perforation g for the tufting-thread to pass through.
The impaler is held in a sleeve H and fixed by the set-screw h, and its lower end is braced by the foot 7L, and said impaler-arm is held to the body Aby means of the headed bolt a and a cross-bar I, which works against the rear face of said body and has a neck which passes through the slot 7:; and is secured in the impaler-arm at L is a handle by which the said impalerarm is worked, and M is the handle of the implement.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the body A, having the slots a, and k, nut F, and step-regulating screw f, needle-sleeve O and set-screw c, and elevation G, provided with the needle-rest g and perforation g, impaler-arm B, provided with the slot E, impaler-holder H, and set-screw h, head I, having the neck 7e, holding said im paler against the front face of said body, spring D, secured to said body, its free end Working in slot E, needle -0, secured to said body, and impaler cl, secured to said impalerarm, allsubstantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the body A, having the slots at and 7c, nut F, and step-regulating screw f, needle-sleeve O and set-screw c, and elevation- G, provided with the needle-rest g and perforation g, impaler-arm B, provided with the slot E, impaler-holder H, and setscrew h, head I, having the neck k, holding In testimony whereof we affix my signatures said impaler against the front face of said in presence of two witnesses.
body, spring D, secured to said body, its free D10 LEWIS end working in slot E, needle 0' secured to s T T 1 v 1 1r 1 r 5 said body, impaler d, secured to sziid iinpalerh Ah but GIL} ERR LIA arm, and loop a secured to the upper end of "Witnesses:
the bar A, substantially as shown and de- 0. GORDON,
scribed, and for the purposes set forth. \V. II. TERRY.
