Description

NJETERS. PHOTaLITMOGRAFNER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
@ v: iattut i (t ALONZO HERNANDEZ FLORES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 86,829, (lated February 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPO'UND SCALE FOR TAILORS USE.
The Schedule* referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom tt may conce/m:
Beit known that I, ALONZO HERNANDEZ FLoREs, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a Compound Sliding Scale for Tailors Use in Cutting Garments; and dohereby declare that the following is a iull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, which represents the said scale as set for marking out a garment preparatory to cutting the same.
'lhe nature oi" this invention consists in reducing the science of cutting garments to a simple and practical instrument, which requires no instruction or study to learn or use, other than a4 knowledge ofthe figures used on an ordinary scae, and by means of which a dress-coat, i'rock, sack, or overcoat, can be marked out on the cloth in a few minutes, the proportions of the human body being all arranged on the instrument in accordance with the iirst and only measure required, viz, the girth of the body immediately under the arms.
In the said drawing- A, BB, and O G G, denote the frame of the instrument, which is graduated, and on which the inner scales slide;
D is the main horizontal sliding bar, which is also graduated, and sustains the graduated hip-bars E E;
F is the breast-bar; and
G is the graduated neck-piece, attached to said breast-bar, and to the vertical graduated bar H.
I is another vertical bar,wl1ich carries a rectangular arm, K, and a pointer, L, by means of Which the position and size of the arm-hole is regulated; and
M is the collar-bar.
Being a tailor by profession, and having studied the science ot' cutting garments from actual measurement ot' the human body, -I discovered that the principal measures, Viz, the length of the body, H I, the neck,
G, theA arm-hole, K, and collar, M, Snc., were proportionate parts (Whether for large or small-size garments) of the girth of the body immediately under the arms, viz, the part A, sixty per cent.; the bar D, both ways fronrthe centre, thirty; the three divisions ot' the top bary O O C, each twenty; the sides B B, fifty; the hip-bars E E, twenty-one and thirteen per cent.; the bars H I, twenty-tive; the collar G, thirteen; the arm K, thirteen; the finger L, ten; and the collar M, eight per cent.; and4 this fact prompted me to design the instrument herein described, whose operation I will explain as fo lows:
ln the rs't place, I take the circumference, or girth, of the body ofthe person for whom the garment is intended immediately under the arms, and supposing the measure to be 64, I take the half the measure, 32, and I slide the scales on the frame and bars to the numbers 32, as shownin the drawing, and I next mark with tailor-s chalk the lines indicated by the scales, as shown in red, on the double piece of cloth, and cut the same, o being the lapel; p, the breast; q q, the hip; s, the neck; t, the arm-hole; nu, the shoulder', t', the collar, and `w w, the back seams; by which an unerring fit is obtained.
Havingdescribed my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
The frame A B O, main and sliding hip-bars D, E E, breast and vertical-sliding bars F, H I, rectangular arm-bar K, and collar-bars Gr M, all graduated, arranged and operating"substantially as and for the purposes described and set -forth.
nature, this 28th day of July, A. D. 1868.
ALONZO HERNANDEZ FLORES.
Witnesses: A. DE Roznz, A. NEiLL.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my sig`
