UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCES A. TRIPP, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DRESS-MAKERS SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,524, dated December 11, 1888. Application filed August 10, 1887. Serial No. 246,589. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCES A. TRIPP, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dress-Maker Squares, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a dress-makers square whereby the drafting can be done by means of inch-measurement alone; and the invention consists of a square of L form provided on its inner side with a double curved piece of metal, the square being marked upon each arm with inches and the usual subdivisions, and it is also provided with scales indicating the neck, waist, and bust proportions, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Ref errin g to the accom pan yin drawi n g, the figure represents a dressanakers square embodying my invention.
A represents the long arm of the square, which I prefer to make twenty-four inches long, and A is the short arm, which I prefer to make twelve inches long. Each of the arms A A is marked with an inch scale, with i the usual subdivisions, and upon the arms of the square are also scales WV X Y, indicating the neck proportions, Waist proportions, and bust proportions. Each of these scales is independent of the otherthat is, the proportions of one scale are not dependent upon the other, but upon the size of the person to be fitted, as will be seen from the description hereinafter given.
In the scale representing the neck proportions the figures in column marked A represents the size of the neck in inches. B represents in inches that portion of the back of the dress at the neck according to the neckmeasure; 0, the number of inches to make a drafting-point in center of front to draw a curve for shaping neck according to neckmeasure; D, the number of inches from center of front to side of neck to make a drafting-point to draw curve for shaping neck according to neck-measure.
In the waist proportions the figures in column A represent the size of the waist in inches. B represents the number of inches at the Waist for center back-piece according to Waist-measure; C, the number of inches for side back-piece at waist according to waistmeasure; D, the number of inches for side- 1 front or underarm piece at waist according to K waist-measure.
In the bust proportions the figures in column A represent the size of the bust in inches. B represents the number of inches for drafting front at the bust according to bust-measure; C, the number of inches for drafting back according to bust-measure.
B is a flat piece of metal secured to the inner side of the square and forms a double curvethat is, its outer edge, Z), forms one curve, While its inner edge, Z), forms another curve. The outer curve, Z), is provided with two marks, A T, for indicating where to start certain curves, and the inner curve is provided with a notch, L to indicate the center of said curve.
It will be seen from the above description that by means of this square and inch measurements alone a drafting for cutting out a I dress can be made that will fit perfectly and i without any change of seams, and that by means of the scales the proportions of the neck, waist, and bust are all taken in inches, according to the size of the person to be fitted, so that a perfect-fitting garment is obtained with much less labor, care, and trouble than the ordinary methods of dress-cutting, either by squares, charts, or other means.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated the method of using the same, what I claim as my invention is A dress-makefs square to be used in connection with the neck, waist, and bust meassurements of the person to be fitted, and consistingof a square, A A, provided on its outer edges with the usual scale of inches and subdivisions, and also provided with scales \V X Y, representing the size of the neck, waist, and bust in inches and proportionate parts thereof as used in the system, in combination with a metal plate, B, curved on its outer and inner edges, 1) I), the edge Z) being provided with marks A T, and the edge Z) with a notch, 19 substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCES A. TRIPP.
IVitnesses:
HENRY W. FoLsoM, E. PLANTA.
