UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED H. S. SWAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIG-NOR TO ROCHESTER STAMPING COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
VAPOR-LAMP.
Application filed February 25, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. S. SWAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor- Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of,
this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
The present invention relates to vapor lamps, such as are used with chafing dishes and cooking utensils of similar character,
and has for its object to provide means for regulating the size of the flame opening,
readily, and in an efficient manner, whereby the volume of the flame may be controlled;
To these and other ends the invention conslsts 1n certam improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a lamp, embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the cover and flame regulating mechanism, the supporting plate being removed, and the shutters appearing in closed position; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the shutters in open position, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan 'view of the cover, with the supporting plate in position.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts.
In the present embodiment, the invention is illustrated as applied to a lamp of the type generally used with chafing dishes, and
in this instance comprising a lamp body 1 and font 2 adapted to contain asbestos or other suitable material for holdingthe light rivet 9. stop 10 is provided on the carrier 7 and arranged to engage an opening in the controlling plate 8 to limit the movement of the latter.
In order to provide a simple form of. connection between the controlling plate and the shutters, the latter are provided with slotted openings 12, in which engage pins or lugs 13 carried by the controlling plate, suitable openings 11 being formed in the carrier to receive and permit movement of said pins. It will be seen from this arrangement of the parts that as the controlling plate, is moved on its pivot 9, in one direction or the other, the shutters will be moved a correspondingdistance to adjust. them to either open or close the burner aperture 4 in the cover, all of the parts having a free and unrestricted movement.
To effect operation of the controlling plate the latter carries a pair of downwardly projecting fingers 15 between which engages the operating element, which comprises a crank 16 on the rod 17 provided with a handle 18 by means of which it may be rotated. The operating handle androd are supported in any suitable way as by a bracket19 attached to the lamp body.
In order to support the parts within the cover, there is provided a plate 20, arranged beneath the controlling plate, but spaced therefrom, and which may be secured within the cover in any convenient manner. The supporting plate 20 is cut-away, as desig nated at 21, to permit movement of the operating rod, and the fork on the controlling plate, and the cover is also cut-away at 22 to receive the bracket 19. I
This construction affords a very simple and efficient mechanism for regulating the volume of thegflame to a fine degree, and comprises few parts, which are capable of being readily assembled, and are so arranged that there is little likelihood of their getting out of order.
I claim as my invention.
1. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, and controlling means comprising a pivotally mounted plate having connection with the shutters and movable transversely of the cover to actuate said shutters.
2. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein. of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, controlling means comprising a pivotally mounted plate having connection with the shutters and movable transversely of the cover to actuate said shutters, and a rotatable operating handle adapted to eifect movement of the controlling means.
3. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, controlling means comprising a pivotally mounted plate having connection With the shutters and movable transversely of the cover to actuate said shutters, a fork carried by the plate, an operating handle, and means movable with the handle and cooperating with said fork to actuate the controlling means.
4:. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and arranged beneath the opening, a carrier positioned beneath the shutters, and controlling means comprising a plate pivotally mounted on the carrier and having connection with the shutters, the controlling means being movable to actuate the shutters.
5. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and arranged beneath the opening, slotted portions carried by the shutters, a carrier beneath the shutters having openings arranged opposite the slotted portions thereof, controlling means comprising a plate pivot-ally mounted on the carrier and pins carried by the plate and projecting through the openings in the carrier to engage the slotted portions of the shutters, said controlling means being movable to actuate the shutters.
6. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opena carrier beneath the shutters having openings arranged opposite the slotted portions thereof, controlling means comprising a plate pivotally mounted on the carrier, pins carried by the plate and projecting through the openings in the carrier to engage the slotted portions of the shutters, the controlling means being movable to actuate the shutters, and a plate for supporting the carrier and controlling means.
7. In a vapor lamp, the combination With a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and arranged beneath the opening, slotted portions carried by the shutters, a carrier beneath the shutters having openings arranged opposite the slotted portions thereof, controlling means comprising a plate pivotally mounted on the carrier, pins carried by the plate and projecting through the openings in the carrier to engage the slotted portions of the shutters, the controlling means being movable to actuate the shutters, a plate for supporting the carrier and controlling means, a fork mounted onv the controlling plate, a handle, and means movable with the handle and cooperating with the fork to effect movement of the controlling plate.
8. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and arranged beneath the opening, slotted portions carried by the shutters, a carrier beneath the shutter having openings arranged opposite the slotted portions of the shutters, controlling means comprising a plate pivotally mounted on the carrier, pins carried by the plate and projecting through the openings in the carrier to engage the slotted portions of the shutters, the controlling means being movable to actuate the shutters, a plate for supporting the carrier and controlling means, and a handle operatively connected to the controlling plate.
