To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN SMEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forestville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Sh1fting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n belt shifting devices,-and the object of my improvement is simplicity and economy 1n construction and convenience and efficiency in use.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved belt shifting device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale, on the line 00 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation, showing the operating device mounted in a different location from that shown in Fig. 1.
My belt shifting device comprises a U- shaped frame having a base board 10 at the yoke portion suitable for being secured to the ceiling, and a pair of arms 11 depending therefrom, the shifting device proper, operated by the handle 12, being mounted at the lower ends of the arms 11.
Slightly above the said lower ends are positioned the bearings 13 for the sliding rod 14, which extends to one side of one of the said arms 11 so as to overhang the same and the belt engaging arms 15 are mounted on the said overhanging portions.
Between the arms 11 and also mounted on the sliding rod 14 is a laterally extending arm 16, having a radial slot 17, and having on the lower side of the hub portion by which it is connected to the rod 14 a lug 18 provided with a slot 19, open on the lower side, and extending parallel to the rod 14.
Below the bearings 13 and rod 14 are positioned a pair of fixed rods in parallelism with the said sliding rod 14, comprising a bottom rod 20 and an intermediate rod 21.
The intermediate rod 21 is positioned in the slot 19 and is a sliding fit therefor, and serves to positively position the arm 16 at right angles to the plane of the rods 14, 21, and 20.
On the bottom rod 20 is mounted in a manner permitting of lateral adjustment a block 22 having a laterally extending portion 23 in a plane in substantial parallelism with the arm 16. As shown, the rear part of the hub portion of the block 22 is split, and a pinching screw 24 in the said split portion serves to provide a binding engagement of the block 22 on the rod 20.
In the laterally extending portion 23 there is provided a vertical bearing 25 for a handle rod 26. The major portion of the handle rod extends downwardly from the block 22, the handle 12 already mentioned being mounted on the lower end thereof.
A small portion of the handle rod 26 extends above the bearing 25 and has mounted thereon a laterally extending arm 27 at the outer end of which there is an upwardly directed pin 28 that engages with the slot 17 Rotating the handle 12 serves through the mechanism described to shift the sliding rod 14 and the belt engaging arms 15 mounted thereon.
At the end of the sliding rod 14 remote from the belt shifting arms 15 there is mounted an arm device 16 having a crosswise slot 17 and on the corresponding end of the bottom rod 20 there is a second block 22 having a vertical bearing 25 positioned in line with the axis of the said rod 20. The slot 17* extends across the axis of the sliding rod 14.
The handle rod 26 is a fit for the bearing 25 and the pin 28 is a fit for the slot 17 and the entire handle rod, arm 27, pin 28 and handle 12, are shiftable as a unit from operative engagement with the block 22 to the block 22 as shown in Fig. 5 so that the sliding rod 14 may be shifted by turning the handle 12. It will be noted however that when operated from the position in the block 22 the shifting may be effected by either a right handed or a left handed movement of the handle 12. In either of the two positions, rotating the handle operates to shift the belt arms and to move the belt positioned therebetween.
