I is illustrated as applied to a lamp of the STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED H. S. SWAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ROCHESTER STAMPING COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
GHAFING-DISI-I LAMP.
Application filed February 25, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. S. SWAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chafing- Dis"h Lamps; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full and clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
The present invention relates to vapor lamps, such as are used with chafing dishes and cooking utensils of similar character, and has for its object to provide means for regulating the size of the flame opening in an etficient manner, whereby the volume of the flame may be controlled.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lamp, embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a view in bottom elevation of the cover and flame regulating devices, showing the shutters closed; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the shutters open, and Fig. 4 is a similar view with the shutters closed, the shutter controlling plate being. removed.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate similar parts.
In the present embodiment, the invention type generally, used with chafing dishes, and in this instance comprising a lamp body 1 and font 2 adapted to contain asbestos or other suitable material for holding the alcohol, or similar vaporizing fluid, the asbestos being retained within the font in'the usual manner.
The lamp body 1 is provided with a suitable cover 3 which may be secured in any desirable manner, and has an opening 4 centrally thereof. A supporting plate 5 is fixedly mounted on the cover, and has secured thereto the friction rollers 6, for a purpose which will be presently described.
Arranged between the top of the cover and the supporting plate 5 are the shutters 7 which are held in pivotal engagement with the cover in any convenient manner as by means of rivets 8. The shutters 7 have ears 9 extending rearwardly from their pivotal points and provided with slots 10. The difficulty has been, in devices of this character, to provide efficient means for properly controlling the movement of the shutters, and to this end, in the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, I employ an annular trolling plate accommodate the rollers 6 of the supporting plate, the rollers engaging the edge of the plate within the cut-away portion and permitting a free, easy movement of the parts.
The controlling plate 11 carries pins or lugs 14 which project through openings 15 arranged circumferentially in the supporting plate 5, and engage the slots 10 in the shutters, so that as the controlling plate is rotated, the shutters will be moved'on their pivots correspondingly toward open or closed positions, according to the direction of movement of the controlling plate.
The controlling plate is provided with downwardly extending fingers 16 with which the means employed for operating the plate cooperates, said means comprising a crank 17 carried by a rod 18 which has at its outer end an operating handle 19, the rod 18 being supported in any suitable manner as by a bracket 20 mounted on the lamp body. The cover 3 is cut-away, as designated at 21, providing a recess receiving bracket 20. l
' To regulate the size of the flame, the handle 19 is turned, causing the controlling plate to be rotated within the cover, and
the shutters to be opened or closed by their connection with the controlling plate. By this means it is possible to obtain a quick action of the shutters and a correspondingly quick control of the flame, by a simple action of the parts, which are few in number and may be readily assembled in the manufacture of thelamp.
I claim as my invention.

In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, a controlling means operatively connected to the shutters for opening and closing the same, the connecting points of the controlling means with the shutters being adjacent to the pivotal points of the shutters, the
controlling means being slidably mounted in the cover and movable in an annular path to actuate the shutters. 2. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, controlling means operatively connected to the shutters for opening and closing the same, the connecting points of the controlling means with the shutters being adjacent to the pivotal points of the shutters, the controlling means being slidably mounted in the cover and movable in an annular path to actuate the shutters, and -a rotatable operating handle adapted to effect movement of the controlling means.
3. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a-lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of fiat shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, controlling means comprising a plate operatively connected to the shutters for opening and closing the same, the connecting points of the controlling means with the shutters being adjacent to the pivotal points of the shutters, and a rotatable operating handle having connection with the controlling means.
4:. In .a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, said shutters being provided with slots, controlling means comprising a plate slidably mounted in the cover and movable in an annular path, pins carried by the plate and engaging the slots in the shutters atpoints adjacent to the pivotal points of the shutters, and an operating handle adapted to' actuate the controlling means.
5. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted to the cover and cooperating to close the opening, said shutters being provided with slots, controlling means for the shutters comprising a plate slidably mounted in the cover and movable in an annular path, pins carried by the plate and engaging the slots in the shutters at points adjacent to the pivotal points of the shutters, a fork carried by the plate, an operating handle, and means movable with the handle and cooperating with the fork to actuate the controlling means.
6. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a lamp body and a cover having an opening therein, of a pair of shutters pivoted 'to the cover-andcooperating to close the opening, the shutters being provided with slots, con
trolling means comprising a plate slidably movable in a circular path, a supporting plate attached to the cover and positioned between the shutters and the controlling plate, the supporting plate being provided with openings, guides mounted on the supporting plate, and the controlling plate having cut-away portions cooperating with the guides on the supporting plate, pins carried by the controlling plate extending through the openings in the supporting plate and engaging the slots in the shutters, and an operating handle adapted to actuate the controlling means.
8.
