COVER FOR BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 311, 191$.
Application filed November 16, 1917. Serial No. 202,297.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM MROGZEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in covers for boilers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a receptacle cover or lid arranged for permitting visual access and ventilation for the interior of the receptacle upon which the device is arranged such means being automatically closable after each operation thereof.
A further object of the device is the provision of a cover for boilers and cookers arranged for providing means for permitting steam to escape at the will of the operator, the cover normally providing a steam tight closing means.
With these general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and then claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is 'a top plan view of the device with the damper member indicated by dotted lines in its normally closed position,
Fig. 2 is a diametrical sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the hagdle taken upon line III-III of Fig. 2, an
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the damper member.
It being understood that the device is arranged for closing the open top of a cooker or boiler, the same broadly consists of a circular lid or cover 10 of substantially the usual dished shape, arcuate in cross section, and having an overturned marginal head 11. An arcuate opening 12 is arranged adjacent the head 11 having a screen 13 fitted therein and servin to ventilate the receptacle upon which the lid 10 may be mounted as well as to permit the escape of steam therethrough while a view of the contents may be had through the screen 13.
A substantially rectangular slide or dam per 1 1 arcuate in longitudinal as well as transverse cross section is shiftably arranged in the interior 15 of the lid 10 adjacent an inturned guide flange 16 on the end side of the lid adjacent one edge thereof and greater than three times the length of the opening 12, with the said opening arranged substantially centrally of the flange 16. The. damper 14c conforms to the shape of the lid 10 and is adapted to slide in contact therewith inwardly of the opening 12 and is arranged for normally closing the said opening. An arm 17 is carried by the damper 14 and is arranged with a shaft 18 fixedly secured through an opening 19 adjacent the free end 20 of the said arm. The shaft 18 is centrally journaled through the lid 10 with a hollow handle or knob 21 secured to the outer end of the shaft 18 and seated upon the outer face of the lid 10 with the said shaft arranged axially of the knob 21.
it will be understood that by grasping the knob 21 and turning the same in either direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 of the drawing, that the damper 1% may be longitudinally shifted relatively of the opening 12 for uncovering the said opening and its screen 13 entirely or to the desired extent, while limiting lugs or stops 28 are projected inwardly through the lid 10 within the path of movement of the damper 14 for preventing the damper from leaving the flange 16.
Resilient positioning and automatic return means for the damper 14 are provided within the knob 21 and consisting of two similar helical springs 22 and 23 having their longer ends passing through arcuate s ots 24C in the lid 10 and secured as at 25 through perforations 26 in the damper arm 11. The said longer ends of the springs being anchored in this manner to the arm, the springs are coiled around the shaft 18 in spaced relations therefrom and have their other or shorter ends fixedly secured as at 27 to the lid 10 within the knob 21. a
The complete operation of the device will be at once apparent, the damper 1 1 being readily shifted with respect to the opening 12 by turning the knob 21 in either direction and upon releasing the grasp upon the knob, the springs 22 and 23 will automatically re turn the damper 14: in its closing arrangement inwardly of the opening 12. The slots 24 permit the springs 22 and 23 which are mounted upon the outer face of the lid 10 to actuate the damper arm 17 positioned inwardly of the lid. A serviceable lid for boilers and cookers is arranged in which the steam may be permitted to escape as found. desirable by the damper mechanism which is manually shiftable in either direction and is automatically returned to its normally closed position by mechanism obscured from View by its arrangement within the operating knob or handle of the lid, thereby providing a compact and sanitary arrangement.
Iclaim as new is 1. In combination with a lid having a ventilating opening therethrough, a damper shiftably arranged underlying said opening, a shaft centrally journaled through the lid, an arm, projecting from said damper and securedto the shaft inwardly ofthe lid, the hollow operating knob for the damper secured to said shaft outwardly of the lid, the said lid arranged with opposite arcuate slots concentric with said shaft and an opening within the plane of the knob, helical springs surrounding the shaft with their corresponding ends freely projecting through said slots and secured to the arm of the damper at copies of this patent may be obtained for points opposite the point of attachment to the said shaft with the said arm and the opposite ends of the springs being fixedly secured to the lid inwardly of the knob.
2. In combination with a lid having a ventilating opening therethrough, a damper shiftably arranged underlying said opening, a shaft centrally journaled through the lid, an arm projecting from said damper and secured to the shaft inwardly of the lid, a, hollow operating knob for the damper secured to said shaft outwardly of the lid, a screen secured within said opening, an arenate guide flange on the inner side of the lid adjacent said opening with the damper positioned inwardly thereof, inwardly projecting stop lugs for the damper carried by the lid adjacent the opposite ends of said flange, the said lid arranged with opposite arcuate slots concentric with said shaft and an opening within the plane of the knob, helical springs surrounding the shaft with their corresponding ends freely projecting through said slots and secured to the arm of the damper at points opposite the point of at tachment to the said shaft with the said arm and the opposite ends of the springs being fixedly secured to the lid inwardly of the knob.
In testimony whereof I aliiX my signature.
ADAM MROCZEK.
