'VENTILATOB.
Spi'ecication of Letters Patent.
Patented nag. 1s', 190x` Applicationied December "l, 190'?. vSerial. No. 405,517.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS F. S'roxns, a
citizen of the United States, and Ia resident of the city of New York, borough-of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have made a new and useful Improvement in Ventilators, ofwhich the following is a specification.
Theobject of this invention is to' rovide4 a device of thisclass which can be Inserted insashes and which will enable the roonito be ventilated without opening a window, or raising the sash. This object is laccom@v of which 1s hereinafter described.
IFor a more particular description of my invention, reference isc'to be had to the accom anying drawings forming a part hereof in w 'ch,
Figure 1 is a'perspective view of a Window ig. 2 is an end view o my ventilator aplied to a window, a portlon of the sash eing shown; Fig. 3 1s a sectionallview taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,' looking in tional view taken on the line 4-4 of 3, looking in the direction of the arrows. ig.
.5- is a plan view of my improved ventilator shown without the' sash.
. Throughout the various views 'of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved ventilator 1 is applied to they frame 2 of a sash 3, and preferably the lower portion of the frame because it is more conveniently located and is larger than any other part ofthe sash. Where two sashes are employed, it is preferably applied to the Vlower sash.` In this frame 2 is made a cylindrical hole of any suitable diameter in which isset a metallic cylinder or bushin 4 which sets snug in said hole. The ends o this cylinder are referably made -Hush with the exterior an interiorsurfaces of the frame 2, as shown in Fig. 3 and the exterior is preferably covered by a wire gauze 5, held in place by a perforated plate 6, which is fixed by screws or other suitableimeans, as shown in dotted lines. The inner edge of/this bushing is slitted longitudinally for a short distance movement o my Invention, one embodimentl Fig. 4 is a secso that lugs 7 may-be bent inwardlg'therefrom for apurpose that will appear elow.
-A second bushing or cylinder 8 fits snug inside the bushing 4 with a sliding fit and at its outer end this cylinder 8 is made open. Its upper wall is cut away at 9 to form an opening through which the lugs 7 pass. This' opemng 9 is preferably maderectangular in form with horizontally disposed edges by which the lugs 7 are rubbed and the ends ofv this opening 9 may be made to have contact with the lu s 7 to limit the longitudinal F the bushing 9 in the cylinder 4. However, the referred construction has the Ainner end wal of the opening 9 where it is free and clear of the lugs 7 an the outer end Wall ofnthis opening impinges against these lugs so as to limit the movement of the bushing 8 in one direction. 'From the foregoing, it is apparent that the lu s 7 revent the bushing 8 from turning in t e cy Inder 4, and also limit itsv inward movement. Its outward movement is limited by a circular disk 10 xed to the inner end ofthe bushing 8, and' symmetrically mounted 'on it. Thisdisk 10 extends beyond the bushing 8 because it is of greater diameter and itis provided with two struck-up ortions 11 which form ringerv holes sothat t e ventilator may bel grasped to draw it inward. This disk 10 is adapted toy t snu against the inner end of the cylinder 4 an the frameI 3 so `as to form a tight joint therewith. j
When the ventilator is not used the bushing 8 is placed in the position shown in Fig. 3, and more or less of the opening 9 is exposed as desired, according to the amount of air admitted to the room. If one ventilator is not sucient, it may be duplicated indefinitely provided the capacity of the sash is not exceeded. lThe ventilator is closed from the osition shown in Fig. 3, by shoving the bushing 8 outwardly, as 1s obvious.
Other-embodiments of my invention may be made which employ its substance, but as .its scope -is set forth 1n the annexed claims,
, one end of'said bushing, inwardly extending lugs on seid bushinfintegral therewith, an ien e of the disk being line with the end inner bushing suitab y mounted in said outer of t e'outer bushing. 10
"bushing having one end closed b aenged Signed this 7 day of November, 1907.
