To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that 1', ROBERT l/VILson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county of Blaine, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door Checks and Catches; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a door check and more particularly to the class of combined door checks and latches.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a latch whose holding power is obtained from the weight of the door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a latch that will also sustain the weight of the door and thus relieve the door hinges of the constant strain upon them, and at the same time hold the door up clear of the threshold while the door is shut.
A further object of the invention is to provide a latch that when properly adjusted will prevent the door from warping and also will have a tendency to draw it straight if already warped.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be secured to a door and its frame for sustaining the weight of the door when closed and also may be used as a door support to prevent the door sagging, resting or dragging on the threshold.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable, eflicient and inexpensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, and as pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a portion of a door and door frame with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of a doorway, the door being shown partly open. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the keeper member mounted upon the doorway. Fig. 4 is a similar view show- .ing the stationary latch initially engaging in accordance with the usual type. Upon the free longitudinal. edge of the door at any desirable point thereof is secured a catch member comprising a metal plate 7, the latter being preferably of tapered formation and has formed integral therewith at its widened end a right angular lip or tongue 8, the plate being mounted in a counter-seat formed in the edge of the door 6 so that the said plate will be flush with the outer face of the longitudinal edge of the door.
Secured to the vertical stile 5 is a stat-ionary supporting plate 9, the same being mounted in the counter-seat formed in the inner face of the said stile so that this plate will be spaced a distance inwardly from the said inner face of the stile. Connected with the supporting plate 9 is a swinging keeper member 10 which is pivoted as at 11 to the plate and is provided with a straight abutment edge 12, the keeper member 10 being adapted to swing to either side of its axis so that the abutment edge 12 will lie at reverse angles with respect to a vertical plane extending through the axis of movement of the keeper member. The swinging keeper 10 is limited in its swinging movement by means of stop lugs 13 projecting outwardly from the supportingplate 9 and being struck therefrom.
The supporting plate is secured in the counter-seat by means of suitable fasteners 14 engaging in the stile of the doorway. The stationary catch plate 7 is secured to the free edge of the door by means of suitable fasteners 15 so that its right angular lip or tongue 8 is disposed at an inward inclination from the outer face of the door.
On the closing of the door the lip or tongue 8 contacts with the movable keeper member 10 at its abutment edge 12 as shown in Fig. 4 in the drawings, thereby impeding the closing movement of the door so that on further closing of the door the catch lip 8 will shift the keeper member 10 whereby its abutment edge 12 will assume the angle of inclination of the catch lip 8 when the door is completely closed, thereby latching the same.
It will be apparent that the keeper member 10 supported by the supporting plate 9 of the stile 5 of the doorway has its outer face substantially flush with the outer face of the stile of said doorway.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a fixed supporting plate carried by a stationary part; of a plate carried by a movable partand having a right angular projection inclined toward the fixed supporting plate, a movable keeper carried by the stationary partand having a straight abutment edge adapted to be normally disposed at a reversed inclination to the inclination of the projection and to be shifted in the same angle of inclination when engaged by the projection of the movable part and means to limit the movement of the keeper member.
2. A combined door check and catch comprising a plate being seated in a door frame and having spaced projections thereon, a plate secured to the door adjacent to the first named plate and having an outwardly extending portion arranged at an inclination and a movable keeper pivoted to the first named plate and normally in position with its engaging surface reversely inclined relative to the outwardly extending portion to be engaged thereby and shifted when the door is closed, said projections limiting the movement of the keeper.
