To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Boncns, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to darts. V
The object of the invention is to improve upon that type of dart now commonly used by avoiding the weakening slits formed in the shaft and to attach the feather to said shaft in such a manner that the entire device will be rendered more durable.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection wit-h the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one of the clamping plates.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a shaft provided at one end with a plurality of grooves 2 arranged at quartering intervals around its circumfcrence and gradually decreasing in depth from the end toward the middle of the shaft. The opposite end of the shaft has secured therein a suitable point 3 which is adapted to embed itself or stick into a suitable target or any surface at which the dart is projected.
The feather comprises a substantially square sheet of material, such as heavy tough paper or the like, and is indicated in the drawing by the numeral 4. This sheet is folded upon diagonal lines 5 and dia1netrical lines 6 so as to form wings 7 extending at rightangles and at quartering intervals. The center of the blank is provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

slits 8 formed on the diagonal lines so as to produce tongues 9 which lie within the grooves 2 and are clamped into position by means of the clamping plates 10. These clamping plates preferably taper from their outer to their inner ends so as to properly fit to the groove and are held in position by fastening devices which pass entirely through the shaft.
In the type of structure at present used the shaft is provided with slots in one end, and these slots so weaken the structure that the feather frequently breaks away from ,the shaft or breaks the shaft and thus causes expense or trouble for repairs. The present structure may be a trifle more expensive to produce, but being of a more durable nature the device is made more inexpensive in the long run.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
' A dart comprising a shaft, a penetrating point secured to one end thereof, the oppo site end of the shaft having grooves arranged around the circumference at quartering intervals and gradually decreasing in depth from the outer end of the shaft toward the point, and a feather consistingofasingle square sheet of material folded upon diagonal and diametrical lines to produce quartering wings, said feather being slit upon the diametrical lines to form attaching tongues which lie in the grooves, and tapering clamping plates secured over the tongues to hold the same within the grooves.
