To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, `WHJLIAM ExHILDE- BRAND, citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsV in Adjustable Feather-Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a feather holder or support adapted particularly to attach feathers in the trimming of hats, and the like.

An object of this invention is to provide a feat-her holder adapted to hold feathers on hats in various angles, and by means of which the feather may be quickly adjusted into different angles, or feathers may be interchanged without removing the socket from the hat or other device to which it is permanently attached.

The invention has for another object to provide a holder for a feather whereby it will not be necessary to mutilate the feather in any way when attaching the same to the hat, and where the feather is supported by the stem only.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following` description which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder as applied to a hat. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder, showing the parts thereof detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sect-ion through the holder, disclosing the stem of a feather therein. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates an attaching plate which is formed from relatively thin metal and provided at its opposite sides and adjacent to its ends with lugs 11 having slots 12 formed therein. The attaching plate 10 is adapted to be secured upon a hat, or the like, and

stitched in position by passing the thread through the slots 12 and about the undercut portions 13 of the lugs.

The attaching plate 10 is provided against its outer face with a socket, the same comprising a tapering hollow body 14 having a plurality of sidesarranged at angles to one another and being closed at its reduced or and accompanying drawing, in

outer end. The inner end of the tapering body 14 terminatesin a sleeve 15 provided upon its inner end with an outturned flange 16. The tapering'body'14 is suitably attached against the outer face of the plate 10 by solder, or the like. A leaf-spring 17 is lsecured against the outer face of the sleeve 15 and is provided with an arched portion 18 forming a yielding catch which engages about the flange 16. The catch 18 is pro; vided with a lip 19 for the reception of the end of the finger whenraising the catch 18 to unlock the holder. The socket is provided with a ferrule corresponding in forni to the socket vbut being slightly reduced therefrom, the ferrule comprising a tapering angularly formed portion 20 adapted to fit snugly within the tapering body 14 and having its sides registering therein to prevent the turning of the ferrule. The ferrule comprises' a sleeve portion 21 fitting snugly in the sleeve 15 and having an outturned iange 22 fitting against the flange 16 and beneath the catch 18. The catch 18 is adapted to hold the flange 22 against the liange 16. The stem 23 of the feather is forced into the ferrule and secured therein by an adhesive substance, or the like. A

In the operation of the improved holder the socket is attached to the side of a hat 24 beneath a band 25, or other trimming upon the hat whereby the socket is hidden from viewf This application of the holder is disclosed to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawings wherein the open end of the socket projects upwardly slightly above the band 25 and the ferrule is inserted within the same.

When the ferrule is inserted the flange 22 bears against the lip 19 and raises the catch 18 allowing the catch to snap over the flange when the ferrule registers within the socket. The stem 23 of the feather is prevented from being detached by the spring 17 and the lip 19.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A feather holder including a tapering socket having angular faces, a correspondingly tapering ferrule engaging in the socket and having angular faces to hold the ferrule from rotation, and fastening means disposed between the socket and the ferrule for holding the same together.

stitching to the side of a hat, a socket carried upon the outer side of the plate, a ferrule detachably engaging in the socket and carrying the inner end of the stem of the feather and having an annular flange upon its open end, and a spring catch carried at one side of the socket for engagement over the fiange.

3. A feather support including an attaching plate having lugs extending from its edges provided With slots whereby the plate is stitched to a hat, a socket carried against the outer face of the plate, a ferrule detachably engaging in the socket and supporting the extremity of the stem of the feather and f having an outturned annular flange upon its open end adapted for engagement against the open end of the socket, and a spring wcarried against the side of the socket and having a looped portion at its outer end engaging over the flange of the ferrule.

A feather support including at attaching plate adapted to be .stitched upon a hat, a socket carried upon the plate and having angular faces, a ferrule engaging in the socket and adapted to be secured to the inner end of the stem of a feather and having an annular flange upon it-s inner end, and a catch carried at the side of the socket and adapted to engage over the flange of the ferrule.

A feather support including an attaching plate having laterally extending lugs at its opposite ends, the lugs having undercut portions and elongated slots, a tapering body carried against the outer face of the attaching plate and having angular sides and terminating at its enlarged end in a sleeve, a ferrule engaging in the tapering body and having a tapering portion provided with angular sides registering With the tapering body and terminating at its enlarged end in a sleeve engaging in the sleeve of the tapering body, the sleeve portion of the ferrule carrying an annular flange seating against the inner end of the lsleeve portion of the tapering body, and a spring carried against the sleeve portion of the tapering body and having an inturned lip engaging over the flange to hold the ferrule in position.

6. A feather support including a socket having a tapering body portion and a sleeve upon the end of the tapering body portion, a ferrule engaging in the socket and having a tapering body portion and a sleeve portion snugly fitting Within the socket, the sleeve portion of the ferrule having an annular flange seating against the sleeve of the socket and engaging With the flange to hold the ferrule in position.
