G. SGHUMAGHER.
KEY RING.

WITNESSES INVENTOR M Charles Sohmaaker COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH CO., WASHINGTON. B. c.
UNITED sraras PATENT oration CHARLES SCHUMAOHER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
, KEY-RING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SOHUMAOHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Key-Ring, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a ring of the character mentioned, having arms frictionally held to form a rin to provide a pivot eyelet for attachment to a chain; and to provide a device of the construction set forth with a plurality of operating handle members arranged to afford a plurality of advertising plates, two of which are covered during the major portion of the time.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a key ring constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side view of a ring constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown in its open position; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the duplicate parts from which the ring is constructed.
As seen in the drawings the rings are constructed from duplicate parts. Each of the parts is provided with a hook 9 and a folding plate 10. Intermediate the plate and hook is a hinge portion 11. The portion 11 is provided with a perforation 12. Both faces of the plate 10 may be utilized for advertising for amusement purposes. One of the said faces, it will be noted by referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, is covered under normal conditions of use of the ring constructed in accordance with the present invention. The ring, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, is formed by the hook 9 of the duplicate parts when the same are overlaid and pivotally connected by means of an eyelet 13. The eyelet 13, as in similar constructions, is provided with flanges 14:, 1A. The opening in the eyelet is of suflicient size to receive a snap hook or other suitable fastening device provided at the end of a retaining chain. It is to hold the hooks 9 in Specification of Letters Patent.

position to form the ring, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, that I have provided the serrated friction surfaces 15.
The operation of a key ring when constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention is as follows :When the ring is in position as shown in Fig. 1, the hooks 9, 9 are overlaid that their surfaces 15, 15 bear against the side of the opposite hook. The hooks are slightly sprung to accommodate this action, as shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings. The spring of the hooks 9, 9 is compensated by the arrangement of the plates 10, 10 which overlie each other and resist the spreading action of the hooks when depressed. Then it is desired to remove a key from the ring thus formed, the plates 10, 10 are grasped between the thumb and finger of the operator, when by forcing one past the other the hooks are spread as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. By reversing the operation, the hooks are closed to form the ring as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
As indicated, the plates 10, 10 are employed by me as means for advertising certain articles and for imprinting thereon the name and address, or other information relative to the owner whereby, if desired, the ring may serve as a partial identifying article. The plates 10, 1O folding, as seen, one upon the other, the adjacent surfaces may be provided with a pictorial or other representation which is preserved from wear and exposure when the ring is folded to the operating position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As an article of manufacture, a key ring having a plurality of duplicate members each having a median perforated disklike hinge section, each of said members having extended from one side of said hinge section a hook and at the other side of said.
hinge section a disk-like extension adapted to form an operating handle for said hooks, and an eyelet pivot operatively connecting said duplicate members.
2. As an article of manufacture, a key ring having a plurality of duplicate members, each member having a median perforated disk-like hinge section and each member having extended from one side of said hinge section a hook the side whereof is provided with a friction bearing surface, said members being further provided at the op- In testimony whereof I have signed my posite side of said hinge section with a disk name to this specification in the presence of section, said duplicate members being so two subscribing Witnesses.
