IMPROVEMENT nv GATES.

The Schedule tetex-reni to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same` B it Vknown thatl, JAMES HAYS, of Fostoria, in the county of Seneca, and State of Ohio, have invented -certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and

I do hereby declare that the following is a fnll, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart' of Ythis specifi- `cation, in which the figure in the annexed drawing represents a perspective view'of the gate and gate# c posts.

The nature of m`y invention consists in the construction of certain devices, hereinafter described, for clos- G designates the gateframe, consisting of thebars `d d, connected by the uprights c c".

'Thc` `rod G will extend upward, andafter passing through" an eye ouupright e, will also pass through the semi# circular cap D,`and at a suitable distance above D will be curved, and extend downward to near the surface of D. The descending end is bifurcated to receive'the wheel or roller Hfthe axle of which will rest in said bifurcations. l

In operating my gate, it will be seen that in the act of opening it, the roller H will ascend to the rear and highest side of capD, and in doing so 'will elevate'thev gate above its proper position, so that when the force is removed from the gate, the tendency of the roller H to descend the incline of cap D will immediately close the gate'.
