PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMP.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oer. 3i, tori.
Application filed June 5, 193.1. Serial No. 631,258.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR M. TYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in portable electric lamps.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved portable lamp particularly adapted for the use of travelers, which is compact when collapsed or ar ranged for carrying, and the breakable parts effectively protected. Second, to provide an improved portable lamp embodying these features which is quickly adjusted for use as a stand lamp, or a suspended lamp.
Further objects relating'to economies and structural details and to details of operation will d finitely appear from the detailed 'description to follow.
i accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and point ed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part f this specification, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my inven tiou, portions of the casing 1 being broken away to show the arrangement of the parts therein when the structure is adjusted or arra ged for transportation. Fig. H is a perspective view ofthe lamp adjusted as a stand lamp. Fig. III is a detailside elevation, partially in vertical section, of the cap and reflector. Fig. IV is a detail perspective view of the couplingpart of the reflector.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. 4
Referring to the drawing, the lamp base 1 is in the form of a casing adapted to serve as a container or receptacle for the lamp, the lamp cord and shade. The cap 2 of the casing 1 is adapted to telescope therein and is reversible, being provided with a stud and the casing being provided with a bayonet slot 4 to engage said stud, so that the top may be reversed to hold the lampin an operative position, as shown in Fig. II, or suspended in the casin shown in Fig. I.
The lamp socket a is mounted on the cap 2 by means of the screws 5'. The opposite side of the cap is preferably provided with a suspending book (3, which is pivoted at 7, so that; it may be folded down into the recess 8 provided therefor in the cap. By means of this'hook, the cap 2 may be suspended as rom the head of a bed or any suitable support.
The connecting'cord 9 is connected to the socket of the lamp in the side of the socket, as at 11, so that the cord can be arranged in the casing and the-cap replaced. The connecting plug 12 is of any suitable type.
The reflector 13 is adapted to be removably engaged with the cap 2, and the reflector being of elastic metal, its lower edge 1% is adapted to lie-engaged within the rim of the cap. The reflector is thus supported so that it can be readily assembled or placed as circumstances may dictate.
A suitable reflector might be carried by the socket Such means of supporting the reflector bein very common I do not illustrate it as my invention does not pertain to that means.
Thebottom of the casing l is provided with a weight 15 (see Fig. I) to give the lamp stability. By arranging the hook 6 to fold down into the depression or recess 8 in the cap, the cap may also be ,used as a base, if desired.
My improved lamp is especially designed by me for the use of travelers, and when arranged shown in Fig. l, for transportation or storage, is very compact, and the lamp is supported so that it is not likely to be injured. The lampis very quickly adjusted for use, and is adapted to be assen1-' bled for use in various relations-that is, as shown in Fig. 11, or the cap 2 may be used as a base, the reflector adjusted or removed as desired, or the lamp suspended by means of the book. The structure further has the advantage of being very economical to produce.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in a simp'lelembodiment. I am aware, however, that considerable variation in structural details is possi blc without departing from my invention, but these variations will no doubt be those cltiiicd in the art to 'nvention reletea, 3 have not attempted to illastzrate or deacribe the same herein. .1
Having time described my invention, what I claim as new and deaire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is:
1. in a portable lamr, the-combination of a casing adapted to serve as a base a ca hai ing a flange adapted to tit into said casing: a lamp socket mounted on one side of said cap, said cap being provided with a securing member whereby it may be reversed in said casing to so pport the lamp in. operative position, or to suspend the some within the casing; a suspending hook on the other side of said can, said cap having; a. recess into which the hook is ada ptcd to coliapse whereby the cap may be used as a base for the lamp or suspended by said liOOl a connecting cord and plug, said cord being connected to the side of the lamp socket, said casing being adapted to receive said cord and plug when the lamp is reversed therein; and a reflector conformed to the lamp and having an engaging portion adaptedto engage in the said cap flange whereby the reflector is removably and adj ustabl y supported therein.
2. In a portable lamp, the combination of a casing adapted to serve as a base; a cap having a flange adapted to fit into said easing; a lamp socket mounted on said cap, said cap being provided with a suitable joint whereby it may be reversed in said casing to support the lamp in operative position. or to suspend the same Within the casii'ig a connecting cord and plug, said cord being connected to the side of the lamp socket, said casing being adapted to receive said cord and plug; when the lamp is re versed therein; and reflector having an engaging portion adapted to engage in the said cap flange whereby the reflector is removably and adjustabiy supported therein.
3. in a portable lamp, the combination of a c. ing adapted to serve as base; a cap having a flange adapted to lit into said casing; a lamp soclcct mounted on one side of said cap, said cap being provided with a securing member whereby it may be revevacdm' eaid casmg to support, the lamp in operative position, or to suspend the same the other side of said ca, said ca having a recess into which the ook is a opted to collapsewhereby the cap may be used as a base for the lamp or suspended by said hook; and a connecting cord and lug, said cord being connected to the side of the lamp socket, said casing being adapted to receive said cord and plug when the lamp is reversed therein.
4:. In a portable lamp, the combination of a casing adapted to serve as a base; a cap having a flange adapted to fit into said casing; a lamp socket'mounted on said cap, said cap being provided with a suitable joint whereby it may be reversed in said casing to support the lamp in operative position, or
to suspend the same within the casing: and a connecting cord and plug, said cord being connected to the side of the lamp socket. said casing being adapted to receive said cord and plug when the lamp is reversed therein.
within the casing; a suspending hook on In a portable lamp, the combination of a casing adapted to serve as a base; a reversible cap for said casing; a lamp socket mounted on one side of said cap; a suspending hook on the other side of said cap; and a connecting cord connected to said socket.
6. in a portable lamp, the combination of a casing adapted to serve as a base; a reversible cap for said casing; a lamp socket mounted on said cap whereby alamp ar-.
ranged in said socket may be supported in an upright positionon said base or suspended therein; and a connecting cord c in nected to said socket.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
