ELECTRIC WORKS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SHADE-HOLDER FOR LAMPS.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 13, 1915.
Application filed February 24, 1914. Serial No. 820,401.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Henry E. BANDLOW, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Ciicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Holders for Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripti on thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a novel shade holder or support for lamps, and the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a shade holder arranged to support the shade in such a manner as to permit the shade to adjust itself to the holder or support in its movements relatively thereto due to expansion and contraction of the shade, so as to thereby avoid breaking stresses being imposed on the glass or like material of the shade such as would tend to break the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shade holder which is so constructed and arranged relatively to the lamp frame as to reliably hold the shade in place on the lamp without the necessity of using holding screws or like devices which exert pressure on the shade in a manner tending to break the same during expansion and contraction thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shade holder adaptable to lamps of the general character shown which may be readily applied to the lamp and to the shade and one which does not detract from the appearance or design of the lamp.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shade holder which may be made at small cost and which. occupies but little storage space in the package in which same is shipped.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a View partially in elevation and partiallv in section of a lamp and shade equipped with a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, the dotted lines indicating the collapsed position of the holder Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the members of the holder after it has been blanked, but before it is formed. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view, showing a modification.
The lamp, embracing a base 10, the upright stem or generator tube 11, and the burner 12, may be made of any well known or approved form, and need not be further described. 7
The shade 14: is a conventional shade, it comprising a lower curtain or h ood portion 15 which incloses the burner and an upper reduced neck portion 16 which is open at its top and is surrounded at its open top with a narrow, inwardly extending, annular flange 17 to constitute a shoulder.
18 designates, as a whole, my improved shade holder which supports the shade on the lamp frame and holds it symmetrically relatively thereto. The holder 18 .is herein shown as supported directly on the upper portion of the casting of the burner 12, the casting being formed with a seat 19 to receive the same and the holder. It is fixed thereto in any suitable manner, as by means of a screw 20 which extends downwardly through a central opening 21 of the holder and into a suitably screw-threaded opening in the burner casting. The holder consists of two lateral members composed of segmental rims 22, '22 curved concentrically to the opening 21, and inwardly extending arms 23, 23 which are formed at their inner ends to constitute enlargements or heads 24, 24 that are recessed at their adjacent margins to constitute the central opening 21. Said enlargements 2 1 of the arms 23 are formed to provide hinges by which the memhere are hinged together so as to swing vertically toward and from each other and to thereby enable the holder to be folded or collapsed, as indicated, in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to facilitate the placing and removal of the holder.
As herein shown the two members of the holder are interchangeable, each being formed by the same cutting and forming dies. In Fig. 4 is shown the form of the blank after it has been cut from sheet metal stock and before it has been formed up. As herein shown the enlargement or head 2 of the arm of each member 23 is provided with a finger 25, located at one side ofthe longitudinal axis of the arm and parallel therewith, and a second finger 26 at the other side of the head and arranged at right as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and
said fingers 26 are bent downwardly to constitute stops to prevent lateral separation of the members. The construction described constitutes a'simple and reliable means of hinging the members together, but, so far as the broader features of the invention are concerned, the hinge may be varied.
The arms 23, 23 are inclined downwardly and inwardly from the rim segments 22 toward the heads 24: thereof so as to give to the assembled holder a dish form, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3. .The amount of the dish required will depend upon the distance the upper end of the shade is supported above the burner casting.
From an inspection of Fig. 1, it will be noted that the shade is supported from the holder in such manner that the shade is held centrally relatively to theburner below, and in suchmanner also that the expansion andcontraction of the material of the shade is not under restraint by reason of the holding engagement between the shade and the holder. Therefore, contraction and expansion of the shade has no tendency'to break the shade.
An' advantage of making the holder in two parts which are hinged together in the manner described is that the holder may be,
readily applied to the lamp frame and shade andremoved therefrom. This is especially true where the neck of the shade assumes the form shown in Fig. 1, wherein it is of smaller diameter at the lower end than at its upper .end. Moreover, the holder may be made at relatively small cost and may be packed in small compass for shipping. It will be noted that the two parts of the holder are rigidly ,heldrelatively to each other and to the lamp frame by reason of the clamping action thereon due to the flange 28 of the holder screw 20, the holder being clamped between said flange and the seat 19.
As: far as is concerned the hinged feature of the holder this may beadapted for engagement with an external shoulder 30 0f the shade or globe3l, as shown in Fig. 5, the'holder 32 in this instance having a peripheral hooked ring 33 to engage under the shoulder or flange 30.
I claim as my invention 1. Means for supporting glass "and like rigid lamp shades of that kind composed of a' lower curtain portion to surround the lamp burner and an upper restricted neck portion formed with an internal shoulder, comprising, in combination with such shade and a lamp frame within the shade and provided below the plane of said shoulder with a holder seat, of a holder contained wholly within the shade and supported on said seat and provided with arms which extend outwardly therefrom and formed at their outer ends with supporting segments to engage said shoulder to support the shade symmetrically of the lamp frame.
2. A holder for glass and like rigid lamp shades of that kind composed of a lower curtain portion to surround the lamp burner and an upper restricted neck portion formed with an internal shoulder, comprising, in combination with a lamp frame, a holder member seated on the lamp frame within said neck portion, consisting of hinged portions provided with peripheral shade supporting rim segments to loosely engage and support the lamp shade.
3. A holder for lamp shades comprising two hinged members each consisting of a horizontally curved shade supporting segment and an inwardly extending arm, with the hinge constituting integral portions of said arms.
4. A holder for lamp shades comprising two members, each consisting of a shade supporting rim segment and an inwardly extending arm, said arms being cut away at their inner ends to receive a fastening pin or screw and a hinge for connecting the arms together.
A holder for lamp shades comprising two members, each consisting of a shade supporting rim segment and an inwardly extending arm, said arms being cut away at their inner ends to receive a fastening pin or screw and a hinge for connecting the arms together, saidarms, inclining inwardly and downwardly toward said hinge, for the purpose set forth.
6. A holder for lamp shades comprising two members, each consisting of an outer, horizontally curved shade supporting rim and an inwardly extending arm, said arms being provided at their inner ends with integral foldable hinge elements adapted to constitute cooperating hinge eyes and pintles to hinge the members together.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 10th .day of February, A. D. 1914. V
