Be it known that I, CHRISTINA MALMo, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Walker- Ville, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lantern Attachments, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to a lantern attachment for dinnerpails, and the objects of which are to provide a device of that sort which can be easily attached and taken from a dinner-pail and serve to keep warm the victuals inside, and as an illuminating means whereby miners or others who work-among similar surroundings may find their way at all times by avoiding obstructions or dangerous places on the foot-roads leading to and from the different mines, and to include in one combination a means whereby these advantages may be utilized from the standpoint of convenience to a laborer of any of the classes mentioned above without in any way detracting from the purpose for which either of the devices is intended when used separately.

A further purpose of my combined lantern and dinner-pail is to so arrange the means whereby they are connected that they may be readily disconnected and used separately for their individual purposes.

With these and various other purposes for which my invention may be adapted my device consists in the construction and arrangements of the several parts, which will be more fully-hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dinner-pail, showing my improved lamp attachment fastened thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the lampattachment.

Similar numerals designate similar parts in the two drawings.

The numeral 1 designates a dinner-pail of any desired construction, preferably round, and has the usual upper ears 2 for the movable handle 3.

The lamp attachment comprises a casing 4 with a bottom or oil-holder formed by a partition 5, which conforms to the dimensions of the casing 4:, the partition 5 being adapted to hold the burner or globe support 6, which in turn holds globe7, that being the. preferred means which I wish to use, although any other kind'of light may be employed. The sides of the lamp-casing 4 (indicated by numeral 8) are extended enough beyond the immediate back 9 to touch the sides of the dinnerrpail 1, at which points they are connected by a second back 13, which curves from the ends of the sides toward the center of the back 9, and thereby enables the casing4: to conform to the curvature of the pails side. This close connection between the lamp attachment and the dinner-pail serves the double purpose of steadying thelamp, thus avoiding any swinging which would occur were the lamp attached by any loose means. 0nd utility of this close connection is that the heat from the lamp is thus utilized in warming the victuals within the dinner-pail, avery useful advantage to a miner or any one who is obliged to carry his dinner for any length of time.

on the top of the casing are welded two fastening means (designated by numeral 10) which hold the wire spring-latch 11 in aperpendicularly-fixed position, said spring-latch having one end of its pin portion free, as at 12, in order that it may be opened when the lamps upper part is being fitted over the inner side of the ear 2, the pin part of the spring-latch l1 resting in the groove made at the junction of ear 2 and the side of the dinner-pail 1. The bottom of the second back 13 of the lamp-casing has near either side two upturned flanges 14, which are to fit under and against the inner surface of the lower rim or resting part of the dinner-pail.

The lamp attachment is also provided on its top with the necessary ventilating means, the particular design of which I have used in this construction, as-shown by numeral 15, being to give to the general appearance a harmonious and neat effect.

The face of the casing is fitted with a glass door 16, which is hinged by any suitable means, the closing side being held fast by a spring-catch 17 From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction will be understood without a further extended description.

Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from any of its advantages.

What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is

1. A lantern attachment for pails comprising a casing provided with a partitioned lower portion forming a fuel-receptacle; and having aback and side walls, said side walls being backwardly extended, and a second back con- The secnecting said sides and shaped to conform to and bear upon the pail, for preventing the lamp from swinging.

2. A lantern attachment for pails comprising a casing having a back and side Walls, said side Walls being backwardly extended, and a second back connecting said sides and shaped to conform to the sides of the pail and serve as a means for conducting heat to the victuals within the pail.
