To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, HARRY L. LIGI-ITFOOT and CLAUDE L. FREEMAN, both citizens of the United States, and both residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench- Vises; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in bench vises and has for its obj ect to provide a vise for use in holding boards or other articles while being planed or otherwise operated upon which is adjustable, easily attached or removed from a bench or other support, and which is so compact that it can be packed in an ordinary hand tool boX and transported from place to place when it is desired to use the same.
It also has for its object to provide a vise which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction and very easily manipulated.
The invention consists in the several teatures and combination of features as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1, is a side view. Fig. 2, a top plan View. Fig. 3, front end view. Fig. 4, a rear end view. Fig. 5, a cross-section on the line -m of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6, a detail section of the shank of the bench stop.
In the drawings in which like numerals denote like parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a portion of a work bench, which may be of any well known form or construction, 2 the bench vise which comprises a frame 3, having a substantially horizontal portion 4, provided with a flange 5, and a vertical portion 6, provided with a flange 7, which extends downwardly from and at substantially a right angle to the horizontal portion 4. Said trame is designed to be attached to the work bench by on its upper edge. A slidable bar 12 is mounted in the slots 9 of the brackets 8 and the outer end of said bar is provided with a clamping jaw 13 which is attached tothe said bar by means of a bracket 14. A slidable bar 15 is mounted in the slots 10 of the brackets 8, said bar being substantially parallel with the bar 12 and provided on its upper edge with a series of teeth 16. To the outer end of the slidable bar 15 a cam lever 17 is pivoted, by means of a pin or other suitable means, said cam lever being designed to bear against the outer surface of the bracket 14 of the jaw 13 and to force said jaw inward and also for use in sliding the bar 15.
18 and 19 are two slidable blocks each having a horizontal slot 20 therethrough which receives the slidable bar 15 and by means of which they are mounted on said bar. The front and rear sides of each of the blocks 18 and 19 are provided with grooves 22 and 23, respectively, to receive the slidable bar 12 and bar 10a. A spring pawl or dog 23a is pivoted to t-he block 18 and engages the teeth 16 of the slidable vbar 15 and holds said block at the desired point on said slidable bar 15, and a spring pawl or dog 24 is pivoted to the block 19 and engages the teeth 11 of the stationary bar 10a and holds said block at the desired point on the said stationary bar 10a. Each of the slidable blocks 18 and 19 is provided with a rectangular vertical hole 25 and in each of said holes a shank or post 26 of a bench stop 27 is mounted said shank or post having a vertical slot 28 which embraces the slidable bar 15, and the top of said shank or post 26. is provided with a head 29 having teeth 30, said teeth being for the purpose of holding the ends of a board or other article while it is being planed or otherwise operated upon. Set screws 31 are provided to secure or lock the bench stops 27 after they have been adjusted to the desired point, but any other means may be used for this purpose. The head 29 of `each bench dog stop is provided with a socket 32 each to receive the shank 33 of one of a pair of jaws 34 between which it is designed t-o clamp a saw blade when sharpening or filing a saw. These jaws 34 may also be used to clamp pieces of material together after they have been glued while the glue sets or hardens. These jaws 34 also not being permanently yattached to the heads of the bench stops can be removed when it is not desired to use them.
yThe bench/stops 27 can be adjusted vertically and locked by means of the set screws 31 for the purpose of engaging and holding a board when it is laid flat on the bench, and can be adjusted laterally and locked by means of the pawls or dogs 23a or 24 engaging the teeth on the bars 15 and 10a, respectively, so that they will securely engage the top and bottom surfaces of a board when it is laid on edge on the bench for the purpose of planing its edges. After the bench stops 27 have been adjusted and locked in the desired positions one of them, the one that is mounted in the block 18, can be still further adjusted horizontally, with relation to the stop 27 mounted in the block 19, and cause additional pressure to be brought to bear on the board, which has been laid on its edge on the bench between the sides of .said stops, by operating the cam lever 17 which will slide the bar 15 in the slot 2O of the slidable block 19 while said block will be held stationary by means of the dog 24 engaging the teeth 11 of the stationary bar 10a and said cam lever will also cause the stop on the block 18 to slide toward the stop on the block 19.
By providing two bench stops placed side by side, which are capable of being adjusted with relation to each other, it will be seen that they will not only accommodate boards 'of varying widths when said boards are laid fiat on the bench, but will also accommodate boards of varying thickness when laid on edge and clamped between the sides of sald bench stops.
When it is desired to use the clamping jaw 13 independently of the bench stops the jaws 34 will be brought together and occupy the position shown in Fig. 1, the slidable bai` 15 being locked by the pawls or dogs 23a and 24 from outward longitudinal movement.
When it is desired to adjust the bench stops independently of the clamping jaw 13 they will be separated and adjusted so that when the cam lever 17 is operated it will slide the bar 15 which in turn will cause one of the bench stops Vto be adjusted with relation to the other bench stop.
One of the most important features of the invention is that the cam lever 17 serves to operate both the clamping jaw 13 and the bench stops 27 either simultaneously or independently.
The vise may be made of any suitable material and of a size to suit the class of work for which it is to be used.
We do not desire to be understood as limiting ourselves to the specific details of construction andr arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and sco e of our invention and improvements. l e therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modiications as properly fall within the scope of our invention and the terms of the following claims.
lVhat we claim is 1. In a bench vise, a horizontally slidable bar having a clamping jaw adapted to 0perate in connection with a bench, a horizontally slidable bar provided with bench stops adjustable thereon, said slidable bar and clamping jaw and slidable bar and bench stops both adapted to be operated by the same means, substantially as described.
2. In a bench vise, brackets, a slidable bar mounted in slots in said brackets and having a clamping jaw, a slidable bar also mounted in slots in said brackets and having bench stops adjustable thereon, said slidable bar with the clamping jaw and the slidable bar carrying the bench stops both operated by the same means, substantially as described.
3. In a bench vise, a frame, slidable bars mounted therein, one of said bars provided with a clamping jaw and the other bar provided with bench stops and also with means for operating said clamping jaw and bench stops and means for holding one of said bench stops stationary substantially as described.
4:. In a bench vise, a frame, slidable bars mounted thereon, one of said bars provided with a clamping jaw and the other bar provided with bench stops and also with a cam lever for operating said clamping jaw and bench stops, and means for holding one of said bench stops stationary substantially as described.
5. In a bench vise, a frame, having brackets provided with slots, slidable bars mounted in said slots, one of said bars provided with a clamping jaw and the other bar with bench stops and means for operating said clamping jaw and bench stops and means for holding one of said bench stops stationary substantially as described.
6. In a bench vise, a frame having brackets with a stationary bar connecting said brackets together having teeth, slots in said brackets, slidable bars mounted in said slots, one of said bars provided with a clamping jaw and the other bar provided with teeth and having bench stops mounted thereon, one of said bench stops having means for engaging the teeth of the stationary bar and the other bench stop having means for engaging the teeth of the slidable bar, substantially as described.
7. In a bench vise, a frame having brackets with a stationary bar connecting them together having teeth, slots in said brackets, slidable bars mounted in said slots, one of said slidable bars provided with a clamping j aw, said brackets adapted to be secured to a bench and said clamping jaw adapted to operate in connection With the bench, and the other bar provided With teeth and having blocks mounted thereon each having a hole therethrough, one of said .blocks provided vvith a paWl or dog engaging the teeth of the stationary bar and the other block having a paWl or dog engaging the teeth of the slidable bar, bench stops having Shanks mounted in the holes of said blocks, means for adjusting said bench stops and means for operating said slidable bars, substantially as described.
8. In a bench vise, a frame having brackets with a stationary bar connecting them together having teeth, slots in said brackets, slidable bars mounted in said slots, one of said slidable bars provided With a clamping jaw adapted to operate in connection with a bench and the other bar provided With teeth and having blocks mounted there on each having a hole therethrough, one of said blocks provided with means for engaging the teeth of the stationary bar and the other block having means for engaging the teeth of the slidable bar, bench stops having Shanks mounted in the holes of said blocks, means for adjusting said bench stops and means mounted on one of the slidable bars for operating both of said bars, substantially as described.
9. In a bench vise, a :trame having brackets carrying a stationary bar having teeth, slots in each of said brackets, one of the slots in each bracket having a slidable bar mounted therein provided With a clamping j avv, adapted to operate in connection With a bench and the other slot in each bracket having a slidable bar mounted therein provided With teeth, blocks mounted on said slidable bar, one of said blocks having means :tor engaging the teeth of the stationary bar and the other block having means :tor engaging the teeth of the slidable bar and both blocks having a hole therethrough, bench stops having shanks mounted in the holes in said blocks, said Shanks having slots Which receive the slidable bar, means for adjusting and fixing the said shanks at different heights and means for operating the slidable bars, substantially as described.
10. In a bench vise, in combination with a support, a stationary bar provided With teeth, a slidable bar provided With a clamping jaw adapted to operate in connection With said support, a slidable bar provided with teeth, bench stops mounted on said slidable bar, one of said bench stops provided with means engaging the teeth of the stationary bar and the other bench stop provided With means engaging the teeth of the slidable bar, both of said bench stops being adjustable horizontally and vertically on said slidable bar, and means for operating said slidable bars, substantially as described.
