The Schedule referred to ingthese Letters Patent nd making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MASON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Flat-Iron Cleaner, Polisher, and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following. taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and forni part ot' this specification, is ade,- scription of my invention sutlicient to enable those skilled in the artto practice it.V

VThis invention is an improvement upon that patented to me March `1869, under the number 87 ,503, my present invention relating to a mixed construction ot wood and iron, .which has advantages ot' strength, .lightness, and eheapness. l

The central parta of the utensil is of wood, which may vbe surfaced on one or both sides with einery-paper o1' cloth, or with a coating or coatings ot' any suitable pulverized abrasivematerial, and the wood is held from warping by the application to each emherosswise of the 'grain ot' the wood, ot' clamping or holding-bars ot' iron, b b, so arralnged that, in warping, the wood must bend the bars. These bars are preferably made of castirou, with inwardly-proiecting flanges, which project over the wood and are 'driven thereupon and are held from displacement by nails or screws. y

The iron bars' are ground on the surfaces at c, d, d, and e, so asvto leave sharp angular edges at ff, over which the faceof aat-iroucan b e moved to scrape off any starch or other foreign substance adhering to such face. which eau then be polished or brightly `scoured by rubbing the flat-,iron across the abrasive temporarily not in use, and may be made to project any yheight desired above the wood, the distance apart. of the bars not being so great as the length ot' a thitiroii, and greater than the width thereof', so that it can be rubbed freely across the abrasive surfacing of the utensil. l

, lt will be, seen that the. abrasive surfacing can be easily renewed on either or `both sides when worn-out.; that the utensil is light both in handling and for transportation; that it packs closely, and vis not apt to break or to do damage in filling', also, that either side up, it presents a support for anat-iron, and two sharp` scraping-edges, so that thedevice, while serving all the purposes ofthat shown in my before-named patent, is an improvement upon it in several of the respects mentioned.

The wood, being a nou-comlnctor of heat, can be hauded without inconvenience, after a hot iiatiron has been sta-udine` upon the bars, while in my old oonstruction,`which was entirely ot` metal, the whole beeainc so much heated by absorption and conduction from a hot tiat-iron, that it could not at Atimes be moved without the use ot' a holder. Moreover, my patented construction had but two scraping-edges and one.

I claim, a iiat-iron holder, scraper f, and polisher g, constructed ot' wood and iron, and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
