Description

UNITED sTATns PATENT onrrcn.
N. B. PRATT, OF DEEP-RIVER, CONNECTICUT.
CARPET-SWEEPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,890, dated February 8, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. B. PRATT, of Deep River, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Floor or Carpet Sweeping Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of my invention taken in the line m, fr, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is also a vertical section of do., taken in the line y, y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of the bearings of the friction driving rollers c, e, in oblong slots g, g, of the box A, and the rollers d, d, in the specified relation to the ends of the revolving broom or brush so that the whole weight of the box shall be thrown by means of the independent movement allowed the driving rollers upon the brush or broom and thus sufficient friction created between the rollers and the shaft of the brush or broom to insure its rotation substantially as set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular box or case of suit-able dimensions and B, is a handle attached to the box A, in an inclined position as shown in Fig. 2. IVithin the box or case A, a rod C, is placed longitudinally. This rod is permanently secured within the box, or, in other words itdoes not rotate but forms an axis for a rotating brush cylinder D, formed of two parts a, a, of equal length placed side by side and allowed to rotate freely on the rod C.
The brushes o, may be constructed, arranged and attached to their cylinders c, in any suitable way. The outer ends of the cylinders c, extend a certain distance within the ends cx, of the box A, and the parts inclosed within the ends of the box are encompassed by india rubber 0l, or other suitable material, see Fig. l. In each end of the box A, a roller e, is placed, and the axes f, of these rollers are fitted in vertical slots g, in the ends of the box. The rollers c, are covered with rubber CZ, or other material the same as that placed on the ends of the cylinders c, and the covered ends of the cylinders c, rest on the rollers e, e, with a weight due to the box A, brush cylinder D, augmented to a certain extent by flaps or aprons E, E, which are attached to the lower end of the box A, and form its bottom. The flaps or aprons E, are attached to the buttons of the front and back sides of the box A, by elastic joints or connections z., arranged in any proper way. The inner parts of the aprons E, E, are provided on their upper surfaces with ledges or shoulders i, z', as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The box A, `asV well as the aprons E, E, and cylinders c, c, may be of wood. The rollers e, e, may also be of hard wood.
The operation is as follows .As the device is moved or shoved along over the floor or carpet the cylinder D, will be rotated by friction only from the rollers e, and the brushes b, sweep up the dirt and throw it up either apron E, into the box according to the direction in which the box is moved. The inner ends of the aprons E, E, yield or give to the inequalities of the floor or carpet and consequently will be always in contact with it and insure clean sweeping, and the ledges z', prevent dirt from casually falling back out of the box on the floor or carpet.
This device is extremely simple, no gearing or bands are required to operate the brush cylinder from the rollers on which the box is mounted. The aprons E, admit of the box being moved in either direction and their inner edges will yield or give so Y that they will be kept in close contact with the iioor or carpet however uneven it may be and consequently the desired work will be done in a thorough manner. The forming of the brush cylinder D, of two parts allows the implement to be readily turned or moved in a curved line as one part of the cylinder may rotate independently of the other. f Y
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The arrangement of the bearings of the friction driving rollers c, c, in oblong slots g, g, of the box A, and the rollers cl', cZ, in the specified relation to the ends of the revolving broom or brush, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
N. B. PRATT.
