Description
Specification el' Letters Patent No. 22,028, dated January 1S, i859.
Fig. an underside view ot the sai c. Fig. Snes a vertical transverse section. Fig.
ft, is an end. 'view showing` the door for removingl the dirt and the znljnstingI mentainism for the rotating brush.
Similar letters ol reference indicate like parts in all the drawings.
The various n'nichines heretofore con strncted have only heen ahlc te sweep car pets, which sin-tacos were soit and elastic. and in this operation there have heen many objections. ln n'n'lchinrs Where the brush is driven by means o1 friction derived from a toothed Wheel resiing on the carpet and workingl a pinion it` is found that the driving wheel will etten i'ahe up crumbs of bread, neces ot dirt or pins which stop the movements of the gears by clogging and mutilates the carpet. In the Harris machine where the brush is driven by a padded Wheel, if the Wheel is pressed against the brush shaft sntiicientlyr hard to rotate it there is much friction. and anyr inequalities in the padded wheel will cause the brush to stop or require an additional force on the part ot the operator to force the machine along. The same may he said of machines driven by means of a traction Wheel and bands. TheisT constantly require tinkering. The great trouble is in the propelling mechau nisrn which is of the utmostJ importance in machines of this character.
M v machine is designed as an improve ment on the Harris machine patented Oct. 5th, 1858 which patent I own.
The nature of my improvement consists lirst in the combination and arrangement of propelling mechanism. Second in an arrangement of means for adj nsting the rotating brush, and third in a means for elleottr ally preventingl the dust from rising` during the opi-ration ot' sivcaqiiinfj all ot 'which will la more Fully hcrcinal'lrr sul 'orlh,
lo this (nd, and to cnzillli those slillml in the art to malin* and nsw my invention l nill proceed to derribo its` construction and oileration.
.`-. ri-qarrscnts a scinicvlindrical mcalc casing.
ll llj are the h ids properl)T attached hy means ot' grooves or otherwise, one of `which is `provided with a door (i, hingfjed at (f/ g) for emptying the sweeper of its dirt.
D is the rotating; brush which has its journal (n {l} in the adjustable lioxes ZJ).
lil is the padded traction Wheel having its hearings at (C ci) which is attached to and moves with a toothed guar l?, which drives a. pinion (l secured to the lirnsh shaft near (of) Fig. 2.
H is i, roller, heilig in hearings (e c) in the linx M, for keeping that side of the sweeper steadyY and at` 'the desired height. l, is another small roller which is secured to and rotates in a traine piece (d) which attached to the end piece lj), by screws` as shown in Fig. 2.
J is the dirt pan.
K is the hex for adjusting the brush which may7 he done both vertically and` laterallyY by means oi the elongated holes or slots' through which the screws pass.
L is the curtain which extends around three sides of the machine and is on a plane with the circumference of the rollers H and I, and evifectuallbv prevents the dust from rising during' the operation of sweeping.
N is a segment secured to the dust pan which tits the radius of the brush and causes the dirt to be carried for ard and deposited into the dirty pan J. 0, is another segment secured to the casing A, and eorresponding,l to the radius of the brash to prevent any dirt from being,l carried over or past its edges by the brush in its revolutions.
The machine is operated by a handle attached at. f to the machine Operation: Motion being given the n1a chine in the direction from left to right, the traction Wheel E will bear upon the surface to be swept and cause the gear F to rotate the pinion G and consequenthT the brush in the opposite direction and the rapid revolutions of the brush Will take up the dirt and dust and deposit it in the dirt, pan J, which (itl @mi nml z'vllulllf: lum;-
