A IMPROVEMENT IN IVIOWING-IVIACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,874, dated May 13, 1856.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, C. M. LUFKIN, of Ackworth. in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire,have invented a new and Improved Blowing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my improvement, x zr, Fig. 2, showing` the plane of section.

To enable those skilled inthe art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the main frame of a mowingmachine, and B is the driving-wheel fitted therein.
To the lower end of the frame A, and at one side, there are attached two bars, having each circular projections or plates C formed on them. rl`he bars and plates are placed one above the other', a space heilig allowed between them.
Between the plates C of each bar there are placed two circular toothed cutters, D D. The upper cutters D have beveled wheels e attached to their centers-one to each-and the upper platesGhave circular holes cut through their centers, s aid holes being slightly larger and concentric with the bevel-wheels a, or nearly so.
'lo each of the upper plates C there is attached an arm, E. These arms project over the centers of the bevel-wheels a and form upper bearings for sin-all vertical shafts b, the lower ends of the shafts b being stepped atthe centers of the lower plates G and passing loosely through the centers of the wheels a. The upper ends of the shafts b have bevel-wheels c attached to them.
F is a shaft, which is placed over the upper plates() and longitudinally with the bar ofsaid plates. This shaft passes through the arms E, which form bearings for said shaft. One end of the shaft has a pinion, G, upon it, and this pinion gears into a toothed wheel, H, attached Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the l to the spokes of the driving-wheel B. The shaft F has bevel-wheels d upon it, which gear in the bevel-wheels a, on the lower circular cu tters, D, and also has bevel-wheels e upon it, which gearinto the bevel-wheels@ ou the shafts b. I is a shaft, placed parallel with the shaft F, and having its bearings on the arms E. rlhis shaft has rollersf upon it, around which endless aprons J pass, said aprons also passing around rollers g, which have their bearings in uprights h, attached to the front parts of the upper plates C. The endless aprons are placed between the gearing of 'the severalcutters, the gearing of each pair of cutters being covered by a cap, K, and the aprons have slats or ledges c secured transversely on them. The cutters D D are formedof circular steel plates, which are placed in pairs, one over the other, and provided with teeth on their peripheries, one side ot' which is beveled to a outl ting-edge, the cutting-edges of the teeth of one other.
The operation is as follows: As the machine is drawn along the toothed wheel Il on the driving-wheel B will rotate the shaft F, and the bevel-wheels d on said shaft will rotate the upper cutters D in one direction, while the bevel-wheels c on the shalt will rotate the wheels c and lower cutters D', which are attached to the shafts b, in an opposite direction. rlhe grass passes between thetingers or guards L and is cut 'by the cutters,the teeth operating like shears, and the cut grass is carried over the cutting device by the endless aprons Jand falls upon the ground back of the cutters. The hooked or bent lingers or guards prevent stones from coming in contact with the cutters. By having their ends bent upward they offer a complete barrier to stones.
The above-cutting device will cut grass effectually even if lodged orbeut toward the ground. The cutters are not liable to become sh aft I is driven by gearing i from the shaft F.
