Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. ALDEN, JR, AND EDWIN L. GATES, OF WVORGESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR CLEANING HOSE, 8w.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN B. ALDEN, JR, and EDWIN L. GATES, of the city and county of \Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Machine for Cleaning and Dubbing Engine-Hose and for other Similar Purposes; and we hereby de clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a transverse section, the same letters denoting the same parts in each.
In constructing our invention A represents the frame, a part B of which is jointed to the other so as to be movable to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and which has bearings for the brush C and the other part similar ones for the brush D. The brushes C, D, are belted or geared to ad mit of their separating from each other without stopping their rotary motion, they being cylindrical brushes.
F, F, are plain rolls to guide the hose.
I is a roll supported by the arms J L and receiving motion from D.
O is a catch to hold the part B in place when not opened.
In operating a rope or strap is attached to the end of the hose and passed under F 'and up between the brushes C D and up over a pulley or roll in the hose loft and down to the roll I. Then giving motion to D in the direction shown by the arrow, the
catch being loosened and the rolls separated to allow the coupling to pass are closed again on the hose, the brushes effectually cleaning the hose, and may be used with water if desired, and by changing the dirty or wet brushes for others the hose can be greased or dubbed in the most thorough manner by applying the grease to the brushes by troughs or any convenient man ner.
We are aware that revolving brushes, are not new and do not claim such as they have been used, but only when constructed and operating as above described.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination and arrangement of the brushes one or both of which are movable to and from the other during operation and the rolls F, F, I, when constructed and operating in the manner and for the purposes substantially as described.
