GRINDING-MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 12, 1915.
Application filed July 3, 1914. Serial N 0. 848,862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. FoLsoHnrD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grinding- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grinding machines, the object in view being to produce a machine especially designed for grinding and accurately surfacing the working faces of glass grinding rolls such as are used for polishing Morocco leather, the machine of this invention being adapted for use on polishing rolls of widely varying sizes and imparting to such polishing rolls a perfectly round surface with a ground glass efiect.
Polishing rolls of the class referred to must be ground I frequently to remove scratches from the working faces thereof so as to enable them to present a perfectly smooth ground surface for contact with the leather and in grinding these polishing rolls it is extremely important to avoid scratching the working faces thereof during the operation of the grinding machine. The invention hereinafter described accomplishes this object in a simple and reliable manner. 1
With the above and other objects in view, theinvention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts. as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a grinding machine embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3. is a plan view thereof partly broken away. Fig.
l is a vertical fore and aft section taken Fig.5 is a fragmentary end view of one of the pressure members.
Referring to the drawings A generally designates the machine frame embodying an adjustable section designated generally at B, said adjustable section comprising vertically extending bars 1 and 2 formed with longitudinal slots 3 to receive clamping bolts 4 which connect the main frame and adjustable frame so as to provide for vertically adjusting the frame B, said adjustable frame embodying a pair of shaft, bearers 5 which are shown as extending horizontally between the bars 1 and 2 on the adjustable frame to which said bearers 5 are iixedly connected.
The bearers 5 are provided with bearings o for a horizontal shaft 7 upon whichis ournaled a pressure device designated gen erally at'C and embodying a pair of pressure members 8 one of which is illustrated as to the lower endthereof in Fig. 5 wherein- 1t w1l.l be observed that the lower end of sald pressure member is provided with a beveled contact face 9 adapted to bear against one extremity of the leather polishmg roll 10 which is shown in Fig. 4 in its operative relation to the pressure device C and the grinding disk and retarding roll.
11 designates a constantly movable grindmg element in the form of a disk which is rotatable on a vertical axis, said disk being mountedfast on the upper extremity of a vertical rotary shaft 12 on which is a belt pulley 13 to receive a belt from any suitable motor, the shaft 12 being journaled in bearings 14 on the main frame of'the machine.
The vertically adjustable frame comprises in addition to the bars 1 and 2, parallel upright bars 15 connected at their upper extremiti'es by a horizontal cross bar 16, the extension frame thus formed being fastened to the bearers 5 above referred to and having journaled in their lower ends the shaft 17 of a retarding roll 18 which is ordinarily composed of rubber and which operates just above the grinding element 11. The shaft 17 is provided with a belt pulley 19 to receive a belt from the motor, the retarding roll 18 being driven as to its lower face in the opposite direction from the adjacent upper face of the grinding element 11.
The pressure members 8 are extended above the shaft 7 and the upper extremities thereof are connected by springs 20 to the horizontal cross bar 16 above referred to. Therefore, when the adjustable frame B is moved up or down, the pressure members 8 are carried thereby and also the retarding roll 18, thus adapting the machine to operate on polishing rolls 10 of widely varying sizes.
21 designates a handle which normally rests on a cross bar 2-2 carried by the adjustable frame B and connected by the means 23 to the lower extremities of the pressure elements 8, .therebyenabling said pressure elements to be raised to admit or release the roll 10.
I grinding The pressure members 8 are held in contact with the roll 10 by means of the springs 20 and said pressure mzembers contact with the roll 10 only at the extremities thereof, the beveled faces 9 of the pressure members 8 being reversely inclined with relation to each other as indicated in Fig. 1.. There is no contact between the pressure elements and the roll 10 at any other point except at the extreme edges or corners of said roll but the whole working surface of said roll 10 is held in contact with the abrading surface of the grinding element and also in contact with the retarding roll 18. The pressure members 8 serve to center the roll 10 and maintain the same in proper relation to and contact with the grinding element and they also prevent any jumping movement of the roll 10 caused by the. tendency of the rubber retarding roll to revolve the glass polishing roll 10 in one direction while the grinding element 11 is moving in the opposite direction. By means of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts of the machine hereinabove described, a perfectly round or true cylindrical surface is imparted to the roll 10, giving the desired ground glass effect necessary for polishing Morocco leather and the like.
What I claim is 1 In a machine for grinding a cylindrical body, the combination with a constantly moving grinding element having a flat grinding surface, and a retarding roll against which said body is held, of a pressure device for holding said object in contact with said grinding element and retarding roll, said pressure device comprising reversely beveled faces which contact only with the extremities of said cylindrical object. i
2. In a machine for grinding a cylindrical body, the combination with a constantly moving grinding element having a flat surface, and a retarding roll against which said body is held, of a pressure device for holding said object in contact with, said grinding element and retarding roll, said pressure device comprising a pair of movable members having reversely beveled faces which contact only with the extremities of said cylindrical object.
3. Ina machine for grinding a cylindrical body, the combination with a constantly Copies of this patent may be obtained for moving grinding element having a flat grinding surface, a retarding roll against which said body is held, of a pressure device for holding said object in contact with said grinding element and retarding roll, said pressure device comprising reversely beveled faces which contact only with the eX- tremities of said cylindrical object, and means acting on said pressure device to hold said beveled faces in contact with said cylindrical object.
t. In a machine for grinding a cylindrical body, the combination with a constantly moving grinding element having a flat grinding surface, a retarding roll against which said body is held, of a pressure device for holding said. object in contact with said rinding element and retarding roll, said pressure device comprising a pair of movable members having reversely beveled faces which contact only with the extremities of said cylindrical object, and springs for holding said members in contact with said cylindrical obj ect.
In a machine for grinding a cylindrical body, the combination with a constantly moving grinding element having a flat grinding surface, a retarding roll against which said body is held, of a pressure device for holding said object in contact with said grinding element and retarding roll, said pressure device comprising a pair of movable members having reversely beveled faces which contact only with the extremities of said cylindrical object, springs for holding said members in contact with said cylindrical object, and means for moving said mem bers out of contact with said object.
6. In a machine for grinding a cylindrical body, the combination with a constantly moving grinding element having a flat grinding surface, a retarding roll against which said body is held, of a pressure device for holding said object in contact with said grinding element and retarding roll, said pressure device comprising reversely beveled faces which contact only with the extremities of said cylindrical object, and means for adjusting said pressure device toward and away from the grinding surface.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
