ALEXANDER BEANGE, OF ABERCHIRDER, SCOTLAND.
MOLDBOARD FOR PLOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Application filed June 24, 1909. Serial No. 504,134.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER BEANGE, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Aberchirder, in the county of Banff and State of Scotland, have invented Moldboards for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to moldboards for plows, and the primary object is to provide a moldboard, in which the point of cleavage or earthbreaking is lo cated more nearly the front end than is the case with the plows as now ordinarily pro duced, and a further object is to obtain greater uniformity in turning the earth from the front to the end of the moldboard.
One means for carrying out these objects is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan View of a moldboard, constructed in accordance with the present invention, and illustrated as attached to part of a plow frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The landside of the plow is designated 1, and the moldboard has a lower edge 2, which is arranged parallel to said landside. This moldboard is elongated, and has a forwardly extending point or nose, and its rear upper portion overhangs, as illustrated. Said moldboard has its main or turning line designated 3, 4 and 5 arranged approximately to coincide with the center of the moldboard. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 that this line extends from the front end 3 at the middle of the front edge 12, to 4, which is located on the line of twist, said line being designated 15, and thence to 5. From 4 to 5, in Fig. 3, said line appears to be substantially parallel with the bottom edge. lVhile in Fig. 3, this line appears to curve from 3 to 4, as a matter of fact, it is a straight line on the surface of the moldboard. In other words, if a straight edge were placed upon the points 3, 4 and 5, said straight edge would contact throughout its extent with the outer surface of the moldboard. Furthermore it will be noted that this main line can be so arranged that the point of cleavage will be well forward on the moldboard. In the present embodiment, the said moldboard is shown as connected by stays 7 with the beam 8, to which is secured a colter 10. Braces 9 are also employed that are connected to the beam 8 and to 1a handle, a portion of which is shown at 1.
hen a pattern is to be made for casting these moldboards, a notch is cut in the eX- treme points showing the required outline of the main line 3, 4 and 5, so that the bottom of the notch is upon the line, then the superfluous wood is cut away from the bottom line and the notch, so that the complete shape is produced. When a straight edge is drawn along these lines, it will accurately follow the surface from end to end. In other words, the surface of the moldboard at the lines 3, 4 and 5 is perfectly straight.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad vantages of the invention.
What I claim is In a plow, the combination with the plow frame, of a mold-board having a straight vertically arranged land side member and a body portion proper, the body portion of the moldboard having a lower edge 2 that is disposed, throughout its length, parallel to the land side, and a curved upper edge 6 arranged at an angle to and crossing the vertical plane of said lower edge, said moldboard body being twisted 011 a vertical line where the said top edge 6 intersects the vertical plane of said lower edge, thus producing an upper overhanging rear part that projects to the outside of the vertical plane of said lower edge 2, and the said moldboard body portion being thus further provided with a turning surface or line extending straight through the middle of the moldboard body from the front end to the rear end thereof.
ALEXANDER BEANGE.
