To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Gnonon O. CHRISTEN- SON, of Newberg, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Landside for Plows of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved landside arranged to give the plowman full control of the plow, especially to prevent the plow from cutting too deep into the ground when plowing on hilly or uneven ground, and to permit of readily passing the plow-point back into the ground in case the plow jumps out when plowing, forinstance,in ground having roots,rocks,&c.

The invention consists principally of a landside having its heel beveled upward and rearward to form a fulcrum for swinging the plow in a vertical plane when bearing on the handles.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a rear end elevation of the same, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.

The improved landside is provided with a body A, having a rib or enlargement B at its base forming a portion widened at one side of the body, the said widening of the base being gradual from the front to the rear, so that the front end terminates in the side of the body and the rear end extends a suitable distance away therefrom to form a shoulder, as will be seen.

The rear end of the base terminates at the beginning of the heel C, which extends or bevels upward and rearward, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 1, so that the heel and base at their junction form a fulcrum-point for swinging the plow in a vertical plane when the plowman bears on the handles. It will be seen that by this arrangement a good bearing is obtained for the plow, so as to cause the same to run evenly and steadily, and at the same time the plow can be swung in a vertical plane when bearing down on the handles, so as to swing the plow-point upward in case the plow is running too deep. The degree of the bevel of the heel O is such that when the plowman bears down on the handles and brings the under side of the heel in contact with the bottom of the furrow then the point of the landside still remains in the ground, only at a lesser depth.

The purpose of the rib or enlargement B is to loosen or displace the earth in addition to that displacement afforded by the mere thickness of the body A, so as to produce a larger fissure in the earth and thus permit the landside to wabble under the influence of the operator.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A landside having a body portion provided with a plane side and a bottom edge, the greater portion of which is straight and the rear portion of which extends upward so as to form a point or bend on which the land side may be rocked, the landside having at the straight portion of its bottom edge a rib or enlargement tapering gradually from the front of the landside to the point or bend at the lower edge thereof, the rib being largest at its rear end and forming a shoulder at such point, substantially as described.
