N. PETERS. PNOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
gaat ma,
SAMUEL H. DIOKERSON, 0F' HUDSON, MICHIGAN.
Letters .Patent No. 100,609, dated M11/rch 8, 1870.
IMPRovnD lWELL-Bonera.
The Schedule referred t'o u'these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it `known that I, SAMUEL H.. Dionnnsom-of Hudson, in lthe county of Lenawee, and in the State i of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful 1 Improvements in Vi'ell-Tubes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the mode or manner of setting in the screen in a well-tube, and also in the construction of the auger to be attached to the same.
In order to enable others skilledin the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which- -Figure 1 is a vertical section of the well-tube, `with f a point or plug attached;
Figure 2 is a side view of theauger;
Figure 3 is a side View of the tube; and
Figure 4 is a section of the pipe, showing the-mode of fastening or setting in the screen.
A represents a'well-tube, which is provided with a number of holes, around each of which is a countersink deep enough to receive a piece of wire-gauze, a, and a cap, b. l i
The cap b has beveled edges, and is riveted in the p counteisiuk on the tube A, rst placing the wire gauze a underneath. By this means the screen or wire-gauze aY cannot be injured by being turned or driven through the gravel or dirt, and it also dispenses with a trialtube, as it can be started from the surface.
B represents the auger, which is fastened to the lower end of the tube A by means of a piu or other suitable means. This auger is shaped and twisted so as to form a coil around the dirt, so that the dirt cannot drop out while being removed to the surface.
' The filter, formed of the screens above described,-`
follows the auger down until water is reached, which will be readily ascertained by it coming through the lter above. The auger -may then be withdrawn and taken olf, and a plug or point, G, put in its p1ace and returned in the Water to the required depth.
When a wellV is to be sunk in rocky ground, I may use the point C in the first place, without using the auger.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Theanger B, constructed as described, so as to Y allow the dirt to be drawn up with it, substantially as herein set forth.
2. Thecombination ofthe well-tube A, having screens ad, caps b b, and augerB, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, 1869.
SAMUEL H. -DIGKERSONl Witnesses:
L. R. Persson, PERRY SHUMWAY.
