WILLIAM BURDITT AND GEORG-i3 H. BURDITT, or BOSTON, AMAS-v sACHUsETrs.
` Leners Patat No. 35,428, dated naamwo 29, 186s.
nuPRovEMENT IN DRIVE-WELLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom t 'ma/y concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM BURDITT and GEORGE H. BURDITT, of Boston, in the county of Suifolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented, a new and-useful Improvementin Driven Pumps; and we do hereby declare that the .following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation;
Figure 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the lter;
Figure 3, a vertical section of the tube, and plug used in sinking the tube;
Figure 4, a similar section, showing-another arrangement for the filter; and Figure 5 is a perspective view of the screen used for conning the gravel used as a filter.
The same letters indicate the same parts in all the figures. f Our improvements consist in the use of a jointed plug, which, illing'the lower section of the pump-tubef necessary to force it into the earth.
It is terminated by a sharp steel point, B.
The section A is perforated by small holes.
To exclude lthe earth from these holes while the tube is being' driven, ,a jointed plug, C, is inserted in the 'lower section. This plug we form ofva series of pieces,
concave on .their lower ends, and convex on their upper ends, so that the pieces, while forming a compactA plug when resting on one another, may have the flexibility required to enable them to pass ,any bends that` may be formed in the pipe while being driven.'
A chain, D, is attached to the plug, for the purpose of drawing it up when thewell is completed. 'The chain must be lcngthened by attaching new pieces, as the successive sections are attached to the tube as it is forced into theground. l
When the tube is driven'to the proper depth, the
lower section thereof should be lled with gravel or other material suitable for filtering the water; and,in
The form of the screen permits` it to be easily forced down to the gravel or other material. The convex face v being down, it passes freely downwards, the portions between the slits yielding readily; but when the screen is down, these arms, pressing against the sides, will'resist any pressure from below, upwards. We have shown, in fig. 4, a modification in the construction of the iilter. Insteadof filling the lower section with the filtering-material, we introduce therein a wire screen, G, the meshes of Ywhich will exclude particles of sand fine. enough to pass through the holes in the section.
Within this screen is a tube, H, perforated with fine holes. This, tube is the lower section of the pump. The intermediate 'space between the screen G and tube H is filled with filtering-material. A coarser material maybe introduced' between the section A and the screw G. f
In iig. 5, wehave shown a screen adapted to this form of filter. -The central tube will embrace the tube H, or it may be used with only a round hole fitting that tube.
' What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure rvrby Letters Patent, is-
In` combination with a pump-tube, of the class that is driven into the ground without first digging or boring a hole,a perforated screen, containing some filtering-material,and an elastic concavo-convex screen, F, arranged to operate substantiallyvas and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, we. have'signed our names to this specification," in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
