CHRISTMAS-TREE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 17, 1911.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLrH SGHWADERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Christmas- Tree Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Christmas tree holders, and the obj ects of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efficiency in use;
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my Christmas tree holder, with part of a tree. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the body of my Christmas tree holder, the position of the legs being indicated by broken lines, and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. l is a reverse view of the part shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same turned 90 degrees from the position shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a plane view of the clamp. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the upper end of one of the legs. Fig. 8 is a top view of the same. Fig. 9 is an end view of the same. Fig. 10 is a sectional view on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 11 is a sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 12 is a sectional view on the line a .e of Fig. 2.
A is the body of my Christmas tree holder and comprises a cylindrical structure having an axial opening suitable for receiving the lower end 15 of a Christmas tree B, and is provided at the lower end 18 with means for removably receiving the upper ends 16 of a multiple of legs C and is provided at its ends with means for holding a pair of clamps D suitable for clamping the said lower end 15 of the tree. The said means for receiving the legs comprise a multiple of longitudinal radial slots 17 extending upward from the said lower end 18 of the body for a distance corresponding to the depth of the said engaging end 16 of the leg C, having side walls 19 parallel to the radius at the outer ends as shown at 20 and flaring away from the radius at the inner ends 21, whereby the said slots 17 have a dovetail formation, the large end being at the inner periphery of the body wall 22. The said means for receiving the clamps D comprise a pair of lugs 23 located at each end of the said body A on one side and in a common radial plane and extending outward radially from the said body proper 25. The said lugs 23 are provided on each side with a radial groove 26, the two grooves constituting a set of grooved ways, suitable for slidably receiving a corresponding set of ways 27 on the clamp D. The outer wall 4:1 of the said lugs 23 is generally flat and suitable for receiving the thrust of the clamping screws E. The said legs C when in normal position extend generally downwardly and outwardly from the said body A, having at the lower end suitable feet 28 and at the said upper end 16 means for engagement with the said body A t0 be described, and intermediate the said ends have along the outer edges laterally extending ribs or flanges 29, crossconnected by a web 30. The said means for engaging with the body A comprise a head 31 fitting the said slots 17 in the body A, being dovetailed in formation, the inner end 32 being enlarged and connected to the body of the leg C by a neck 33. I prefer to have the said neck 33 of the same width as the thickness of the said web 30 of the leg C as shown. The total depth of the said head corresponds to the depth of the said end 16 of the leg C, whereby the said lateral flanges 29 extend laterally from the same and form Ishoulders 341 suitable for engaging with the outer periphery of the said body A. As described, the said ends 16 of the legs C are engaged with the said body A by sliding the said end 16 of the legs into the said slots 17 in the body A and are locked in position suitably for supporting the said body A and the tree B held in the said body.
The said clamp D comprises a ringshaped body 35 having an opening 36 corresponding to the opening in the body A, and has on one side a lug 37. The said lug 37 has an opening or slot 38 extending radially from the said central opening 36 and having radial side walls consisting of the said ways 27, generally V shaped, and fitting the said ways 26 on the said lugs 23 on the said body A. The outer end of the said slot 38 is closed by a bridge 39, cross-connecting the outer ends of the said ways 27, and the said bridge 39 is provided with a radial screw-threaded opening L10 suitable for receiving the said clamping screw E. rlhe said clamping screw E is preferably provided with a winged head 42 as shown. In placing the said clamps in position the said ring body 35 is placed over the lugs 23 andthe Ways 26 and 27 brought into env gagement and then the clamp is moved radially, guided by the said Ways, until the interior Wall of the said ring body is generally flush with the inner Wall of the said body A. The tree may be then inserted and may be clamped and secured by turning the clamping screw E, whereby the ring body 35 Will draw the tree against the Wall of the body A. By providing tWo clamps as described means are provided for insuring a proper alinement of the tree relatively to the said body A.
By providing Ways as described the clamps `Will be ret-ained positively in position at all times, under normal conditions, Whether the tree is in position or not and Whether or not a clamping pressure is applied.
It is apparent that some. changes from the specific construction herein disclosed may be made and therefore I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of construction shown and described, but desire they liberty to make such changes, in Working my invention, as may fairly come Within the spirit and scope of the same.
As described, my Christmas tree holder is suitable for firmly securing a Christmas tree and supporting the same, and When not in use and not Wanted for such purpose the same may be taken apart, the legs and the clamps being removed from the body, and
` the partsmay be packed in a relatively small space.
I claim as my invention l. In a Christmas tree holder, a main body provided with legs and comprising a cylindrical structure having an axial opening for receiving the end of a tree, and a lug on one end thereof, a pair of Ways on each side of the said lug, in a plane at right angles to the axis of said opening and parallel to a radius, a clamp member comprising a ring body having a main opening corresponding to the said axial opening and a radial extension of the said main opening inclosed laterally by Ways tting the said first Ways and at the outer end by a bridge, a clamping screw operative in a threaded hole in the said bridge, and having its end in abutment with the said lug, and the said Ways of such length relatively to the said main opening as to permit freely the engagement of the said Ways With the said lug inclosed by t-he said main opening and With the said clamping screw retained in engagement With the said bridge.
2. A Christmas t-ree holder comprising a main body providedy yWith legs, having a cylindrical structure provided With an axial opening for receiving the end of a tree, and a 4double set of means for clamping the said end of the tree, said means located one at each end of the said body, each of t-he said means comprising a lug on said body having lateral Ways and a clamping member comprising means for engaging the said end of the tree, Ways cooperative with thesaid first Ways, and aclamping screw suitable for engaging with the said lug.
