WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 8, 1911.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
serial No. 631,970.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD L. MAR- SHALL and GEORGE P. PAvLIx, citizens of the United States, and residents of Ruth, in the county of Knox, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in wrenches, and has for its object the provision of a simple, compact, convenient wrench of the alligator type, comprising a handle, a fixed, and a movable jaw, and having means for moving the movable jaw toward and from the iixed jaw, and for locking it in adjusted position.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View of the improvement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of one end of t-he improvement with the cover plate removed; Fig. 3 is a plan view of one jaw; Fig. 4 is a sect-ion on the linel 4 4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking bar.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a shank 1 formed into a grip at one en'd, and having the other end enlarged at 2, and formed into a jaw 3 on the opposite side of the enlargement from the grip. The
enlargement 2 is substantially rectangular in cross section and is recessed on one face at 4, the recess being substantially rectangular as shown, and opening into a recess 5 substantially circular in cross section at the end of the said enlargement. The enlargement is transversely perforated at the center of therecess 5, as indicated at 6, vand a boss or hub 7 encircles the perforation or opening in the recess. An arc-shaped rib 8 is provided between the recesses 4 and 5 of a.p proximately the same height as the boss, and the rib is formed on a circle having its center at the center of the recess.
The jaw 3 is the fixed jaw of the wrench, and the movable jaw 9 is provided at its inner end with an enlargement 10 filling the recess 5. At the center of the recess the jaw is perforated at 11 and counterbored at 12 around the perforation or opening to receive the boss or hub 7. A pin 13 provided at one end with a head 14 and at the other with a transverse opening 15 is passed through the registering openings 6 and 11,
Iand is held in place by the head, and a pin 16 passed through the opening 15.
The jaw 9 is provided with an extension 17 on `the opposite side of the enlargement and extending substantially radially therefrom, and the outer face of the extension and the outer face of the enlargement are grooved at 18, the groove extending radially to the pin 13 and being enlarged laterally on both sides at its inner end, as indicated at 19.
A bar 20 is seated in the groove 18 and is provided with a head 21 at its inner end, fitting the enlarged end 19 of the groove. The outer end of the groove 17 is deepened, as indicated at 22 in Fig. 4, and a coil spring 23 is seated in the said portion between the extension 17 and the end of the bar. The bar 2O extends beyond the end of the extension and is provided with an outwardly extending lug 24. A cover plate 25 is seated on the enlargements 2 of the shank and 10 of the movable jaw and is held in place by screws 26. The plate is provided with an opening for receiving the pin 13 and the head 14 of the pin engages the outer face of the plate. The plate is also provided with an arc-shaped slot 27 near the opposite end from the pin 13, and the bar 20` is provided .with a threaded recess 2S registering with the slot. the pin 13 as a center, and a screw 29 is passed through the slot and engages the threaded opening 28. The plate 25 is pro vided with an arc-shaped series of openings 30 adjacent to the slot 27 for receiving the pin 24 on the bar 20.
The wrench is assembled by placing t-he iixed jaw on the shank with the bar 20 and spring 23 in place, and the cover plate 25 is arranged over the enlargements and secured in place by the screws 26. The pin 13 is then placed and the pin 16 is inserted. The set-screw 29 is then placed in position and the wrench is ready for use. In using the wrench the jaw 9 is operated by means of the screw 29. It will be noticed that the end of the groove 18 remote from the pin 13 is beveled, as indicated at 31 in Fig. 4, so that the bar 20, which is the locking bar, rock in the groove. The portion 21 of the bar is also beveled, as indicated at 32, for the same purpose. Vhen the bar is rocked by depressing the head of the screw 29, the lug 24 may be disengaged from the openings 3() to permit the movable jaw to be swung on the pivot pin 13 to open or close the jaws. When the bar is released, the jaw is held in adjusted position.
